Hi, does anyone know how many students Minnesota/Guthrie accepts to yield their Freshman class of 20? Do they waitlist? I believe I've heard they invite 60 to their call-back weekend, so I am trying to deduce how many are actually accepted. Even if they only accept 20 of those 60, a 1 out of 3 chance is pretty good in this business! Thanks!

A friend who got a call back said that she was told that 45% would be accepted out of the call back pool. That would be 27.

Yes, once you get to the callback weekend, you have a darned good chance (compared to the odds going into the first audition) of being accepted.

I noticed CMU is listed as having 18 acting. The CMU website lists the current students in each of the School of Drama disciplines. 2008-2009 freshman started with 14 in acting (9 men/5 women). There are 12 MT's. The sophomore class has 17 acting and 10 MT. The junior class has 16 acting and 10 MT. The senoir class is the largest 20 acting and 11 MT. Each class has more men than women. Some of these individuals may have left the program. I don't think they update the website when individuals leave the program. As we know every program/college /university has people who leave for a variety of reasons.

Thank you all for the Guthrie acceptance/yield numbers. They are very helpful.

A few things to remember....

First, the size of the class doesn't indicate selectivity, generally speaking. A class of 12 is not necessarily more selective than a class of 28. It is about the PERCENTAGE admitted.

Second, you have to look at how many are admitted of those who audition, and not the size of the class (the yield). For example, if the class size is 12, they may have admitted 25 to yield 12. At another school, they may have admitted 15 to yield 12. So, you need to look at how many AUDITIONED and then how many were ACCEPTED to get the percentage or admit rate, and not how many slots there are in the class.

Third, you have to examine the talent pool. Often, either a more prestigious program or one that is known on a national level will have a different talent pool than one known on a regional level or that is not as "prestigious". There will be overlaps of candidates at these schools, but generally speaking, their ENTIRE talent pool is not identical. For example, the talent pool for NCSA, CMU or Juiiliard is not the same as for Montclair State or TCU or Point Park for Acting OVERALL (even is some kids apply to all of these).

In terms of gauging "selectivity," all these factors would have to be considered, let alone the level of academic selectivity at each institution, which varies a lot (ie, getting in academically to NYU or Emerson is harder than to Point Park or Pace).

Do you know the size of the auditioning class for Acting at calarts, ncsa or depaul this year a ball park number?
I know little of both programs and would like to know more.
Also does calarts prepare actors with tools for theater equal to NYC -- or does its LA movie proximity alter that focus significantly?
I can't decide if discovering CC has made this process more of less relaxed... with a place to ask questions, I seem to have more and more of them.

I auditioned for UNCSA on Feb. 28 and I heard one of the drama students who was helping with auditions tell an alumnus that 600-700 people are auditioning this year.

Unfortunately, it was right before I auditioned. I didn't mean to hear it, but, I did hear it.

600-700 really isn't that much compared to the other schools around the country...

Yeah, it's just not something you want to be thinking about RIGHT before your audition. 28-32 out of 700.
28-32 out of 700.
28-32 out of 700.....

see? :)

yeah its horrible.. but some schools have like 2,000

^ I don't think anyone really auditions 2000. There aren't enough hours in the season for a program to sacrifice the faculty time for that. Some might include all the people they see in passing at the Texas cattle call type deals in their numbers, but that isn't really auditioning. Juilliard typically only auditions between 1000 and 1200. NYU probably sees more but they have a lot more auditors holding the auditions.

Don't worry. It'll all be over soon although it feels like an eternity. Gah ... I remember my senior year in h/s when it seemed like each week was a year. Just know that next year it'll seem like it all happened in a flash ... unless you end up like I did and go through the whole freakin' thing again ... As my oh-so-countrified grandmother would say, "Don't do like I done!" LOL

Oh, and here's an update with some new numbers ...
