I'm not sure I really believe the 600-700 number for NCSA. I mean, maybe that many auditioned, but did they apply? According to NCSA's own website, the TOTAL number of Freshman applicants for ALL undergraduate programs in 2008 was 655 (less than that student said auditioned for drama alone this year), of which 284 were accepted. This is pretty consistent. In 2007, there were 679 Freshman applicants. In 2006, there were 645 Freshman Applicants. Of this number, in 2008, we know 30 were drama students. Total number of drama students in all four years is 133. Drama is one of the smaller programs. Film Making is very popular. The four years has 278 students. Music has 269. Design & Production has 242 and Dance has 201. I believe these programs have many applicants as well. So, if they really had 600-700 audition, then NCSA had a HUGE increase in total applicants, or we are considering those who auditioned at theatre fairs and also those who auditioned at unifieds, but never turned in their applications.

^ Interesting. I don't think they audition at theatre fairs. They do apparently sometimes take walk-ins at the Unifieds, though. Interesting points, but the numbers given the last time I auditioned for them came out to around a 6% admit rate implying around 500 auditioning in 2006 although I don't remember the exact numbers since it's been awhile. Dang ... Quite awhile ... LOL Remember that it's harder for girls, though, since they admit around 20 boys and 10 girls.

I know 2000 is a lot... BUT on my tour of Carnegie the tour guide told me that they were auditioning over 3000 this year for mt and acting together.....? I know this is completely unrealistic... but it is just odd that I was told this... hmm...

All I know is this is what the official records are on the NCSA website for total freshman applicants. I'm wondering if people audition, but never finish the actual application process...in other words, they don't get in their test scores, letters of recommendations, forms of various sorts, etc. So, when the school says this many people audition, that may be so. But in actuality, they aren't considering some of those people for failure to follow through. So you really aren't competing with 600-700. You are only competing with the 400 (or less, given the numbers I'm showing you) who actually did the paperwork. I saw an article a few years ago (couldn't find it again) where NCSA claimed to have 500 audition for its acting program. Yet, I showed you above the total freshman applicants for all schools the past few years were in the neighborhood of 650 plus, with around 280-300 accepted each year. The numbers don't make sense. Of those 650, 500 were acting? I don't think so. I think we all have to accept these numbers with a healthy sense of cynicism.

As for CMU, I have never heard a number as high as 3000. The usual number quoted is 1300. NYU doesn't audition that many, and they are a machine! When we were at LA Unifieds, there were a lot of kids at the CMU audition, but not enough that if they did the same approximate number at each audition, they would get to 3000 for all the auditions they had.

yeah it doesn't make any sense he must have said it wrong....

Does anyone know the admission numbers for Fordham?

Has anyone heard anything from CMU yet? It sounds as though the BFA MT class has been notified. Anyone been notified for BFA Acting?

I don't think the actors have been notified...at least I haven't heard of any

Just wondering, does CMU notify students by phone or mail?

Word of mouth is someone did get accepted into CMU for acting but I don't know. I try very hard not to listen to those things but someone mentioned that to me today.

Has anyone else heard?

Yes, some (all?...don't know) BFA Acting acceptances from CMU have occurred in the past day or so.

Same question as above, CMU email or snail? Nothing here yet...
My D rejected from Julliard, and accepted from Tisch, ( got that letter last Thursday) and U of Illinois Urbana.

...dumb question...when we say, "yield," this means that is the average number of graduates...right?

TimThom, it's my understanding that in the admissions jargon "yield" means the number of students the school hopes to enroll, i.e., Emerson accepts 50 BFA Actors to yield 25 which means they would accept 50 with a goal of actually enrolling 25. I know that the school's feel their acceptance/enrollment numbers are fairly accurate from year to year, but I do sometimes wonder what would happen if the yield promised to be much larger than expected.

This situation happened to a girl at my daughter's previous high school for Visual Arts. She had applied binding early decision and was accepted at a small college in Colorado last year, but was then defered in June after final Senior grades were sent to the college. It turns out her GPA dropped .03 points, and because the college had more students enroll than was expected, she was defered a year because of the miniscule drop in GPA.
