SJSU or LOW TIER UC

Is SJSU better than UCR, UCM, UCSC for statistics and computer science? And, what are the best pros and cons to go to sjsu

It depends on your preference in terms of location and what you like to get out of your time in college. SJSU is a great school for Comp Sci (not sure about Stats) but unfortunately, it’s VERY impacted. I have friends who attend SJSU and have a hard time getting classes because their Comp Sci program is so impacted. Also keep in mind that SJSU is actually very good for majors such as Engineering, Comp Sci, & even Business. Just because it’s a CSU doesn’t mean it’s bad. It just depends on the program you’re looking for. That being said, UCR & UCSC are also very good for Comp Sci (I know nothing about UCM so I can’t say anything about it). UCR & UCSC may be “lower tier” UCs but keep in mind you’re essentially getting the same education attending a UC in general. Sure, it may not be like Berkeley but UCs as a whole are more research based while CSUs are more hands on. I’m a Poli Sci major at UCD and my professors still use books published by professors from UCR. It honestly comes down to the environment you like and prefer. UCSC is more nature like and “hippie”. I’ve heard it’s full of hills and as you know, it’s a school known for its reputation of having many students doing pot (doesn’t mean you’ll be forced to do it too and let’s be real, every campus has students doing it. It’s just for some reason, UCSC is more known for such reputation than other schools). UCR on the other hand, is more inland so it’s more hot (it’s ~2hrs from Vegas). Personally, I love UCR because of how small it is. UCR was actually my first choice school but my parents wanted me closer to home so I ended up at UCD.

In terms of pros and cons for SJSU. I’m a local in SJ so it’s one of the reason why I didn’t choose SJSU. LOL. I wanted to leave home and explore a bit. But definitely, I didn’t like its location. SJSU is actually in downtown SJ and like most downtown locations, there’s a problem of homeless people. I also avoid driving in downtown SJ just because of reckless pedestrians and drivers. This is coming from someone who lived in SJ all their life. HAHA. However, SJSU does have many great food locations around campus you can explore if you’re tired of school food. The school also has greek life and different orgs you may join to make new friends. My boyfriend actually attends SJSU and he LOVES it. As a city. I love San Jose and it’s diversity. I miss it so much after leaving for Davis. Overall, it honestly depends on what you look for. If you do have the chance, I’d definitely recommend visiting the campuses to see which a good fit for you. Good luck and congrats on your acceptances

For CS, I’d rank them
UCSC
SJSU
UCR
UCM

For math/stat it isn’t nearly as compelling a propositioning and IMHO would rank below the UCs you are talking about.

As the previous poster notes, you gotta like the area around where you go to school. SJ is more expensive and and more crowded than virtually anywhere in CA - which is saying something.

Visit the schools for yourself and see what you think.

I’m a Stats major and it’s awesome. The curriculum is on-top, faculty are available to work closely with you, and registration for classes aren’t too much of a pain

In my opinion for those three UCs…

Merced has no reputation, it is a huge risk to go there. It’s not a bad school persay, but it’s not okay to judge a 13-year old school.

Riverside has a solid stats program but I’m not too sure if that’s the case for CS. Santa Cruz is the opposite.

If you want to research during the year, I would recommend SC or R. In all other aspects, I think SJSU is better for what you’re getting.
