i recently got into u-m (woohoo) and understand that the campus(es) are pretty big. i know that lots of people ride bikes to get from place to place, but i was wondering whether skateboarding is allowed. also wondering whether it’s even doable since there can be so much snow… i assume that there are a decent amount of longboarders, but i’m interested in learning to skateboard if it’s possible.
I am not sure if @rangersfan800 is being serious. A lot of people skateboard to get across campus. They are prohibited in near/around/in some on-campus residential areas, however (and maybe some other places).
UMich has an excellent bus transit system that is free for you to use, and buses come frequently. You can also ride the Ann Arbor city buses for free. Lot of people bike. I’ve seen skateboards and in particular those weird little fold-up scooters. Previous poster is correct on there being some restrictions. As long as you carried your board through those areas, you’d be ok. Walkways are kept shockingly clean on campus…there’s a whole fleet of little snow removal mini-trucks that zip along cleaning walking paths and sidewalks. After living there a while, you’ll probably find it very easy to take the bus and walk.
They also have the best video ABOUT the bus system I’ve ever seen - it’s brilliant! - worth watching even if you aren’t ever planning to step foot on the Mich campus. Fabulous production by their musical theater et al:
It’s about a 10 min walk from any point on central campus to any other point. The other campuses are about 35 min (walk) to North from Central, or 15-20 South (athletic) from central. Almost everyone takes the bus to and from N Campus and walks to the stadiums and fields. In bad/cold weather many students take the bus to south campus. People tend to bike to and from a single campus but rarely between them.
