skateboards

i was thinking of getting one, for getting around to classes faster. how practical is a skateboard on campus?

*the reason i ask is because ive never used one before so i would need to learn how to skateboard
I am a south campus major living in Sproul

When I went for a campus tour a saw a handful of people using longboards. I didnt really spot out anyone with skateboards, but Im sure it wont be too obscure if you decided to bring one. If you’ve never used one before I wouldnt really recommend it just for college. The guys that were whooshing by were able to negotiate the terrain and pedestrians very well, and thats good because it gets crowded sometimes.

If you can get one asap and start practicing over the summer just cruising down the street at moderate streets and feel comfortable enough, then in that scenario it wouldnt hurt to bring it to school by fall

You’ll be able to get to all your classes within 15 minutes on foot… easily. I was able to get to them within that time frame from Hedrick Hall, which is a tad farther away.

If you really think it’ll be a problem, get a skateboard or bike. Just remember you’ll be going down quite the slope going to class and then going back up it on the way back.

Personally, I think you’ll be fine on foot. Just head to class like 20-30 minutes early the first week or so to time how long it takes you to get there, then take it from there.

longboard is helpful but i would say no to skateboards, a lot more effort used to skate around… but like TheRageKage said it is easy to get to classes on foot and hills can be a problem… i know personally that you can get from sproul to ms (math-science) in 10 minutes (had to do that once i woke up late for midterm :() but normally i take my time and go between 20 and 30 minutes…

k thanks everyone

I love having a longboard on campus :]. I can’t imagine walking around anywhere anymore haha… Takes me <10 mins to get to MS, and it is so much fun haha. I’ve become quite lazy with one… I take the MS elevator everyday ;]

If you want to start riding right away… then yeah you should learn before you come… But it’s okay if you don’t know by the time you are here. Few of my friends learned in the middle of Winter quarter, and they were riding to class everyday in Spring.

Longboards can be pretty expensive, so make sure you are willing to buy one =P. Most people ride Sector 9’s I think. I started with a skateboard with longboard wheels, but I just got a Loaded Dervish. It is amazing, but Loaded boards cost a lot =P. To me it was worth it ;].

Good luck, and have fun :]

I think it is nice to have if you are skilled with it. I remember walking down Charles E Young while a guy careened down on his skateboard, lost control, and fell flat on his face with an ominous SMACK. Before he picked himself up, everyone there thought he may have needed facial reconstructive surgery.

thanks everyone, but i think i’ll refrain from acquiring potential injuries until year two, after hearing the advice. =]

oh cmon. unless ur reallllly bad at skateboarding nothing will happen to you. most of the time ppl think theyre “good” and go down the hill on bruinwalk or down steep streets and get hurt. if you skate smart, it can become the most enjoyable thing. i skate to class, wake up 5 minutes before class, and get there before the lecture even starts. ive only been skating for like 4 years now and i cant remember the last time i got hurt. its up to you though

Yeah I agree… just be safe… Don’t go down hills until you are ready… I used to ride a board back in 7th grade and just started again 6 months ago. I haven’t fallen yet (other than getting owned by a rock or crack at SLOW speeds, which is nothing)
knocks on wood
Just be safe… don’t do things until you are ready.

If you want… find a friend who has one and try it out… Then see if you would want to spend the money to get a decent one. Good luck!

somewhat related…

a friend of mine doing some longboard tricks around ucla

^he makes it look so easy. haha i would be lucky to get across the street in one piece.

ahhhh i cant wait to get a dervish. im riding a sector9 goddess rite now. its pretty sweet but not even close to the amount of fun u can have with a dervish

Holy crap you know that guy? I was watching that video 2 weeks ago and fell in love with it. The filming and editing are amazing (done by Adam Colton).

But yeah… who is this guy? Does he actually go to UCLA? I figured he was just some guy sponsored by Loaded, and since Loaded is located on Wilshire… I figured UCLA wasn’t too much out of their way =P.

Nice video. Really liked the small tour of UCLA :D

he works at loaded now and yeah he’s still at ucla
