I know Marist campus is beautiful, yet the surrounding town is not. Is there a lot of crime both on and off campus? If you don't have a car (freshman) is there Anything to do? Do people walk off campus often and is there much to do within walking distance?

First time post. We had the same feeling. Surprised no one else has replied thus far. For what it is worth, we visited the campus recently on a Saturday. Informal visit. Loved the school, but not the surrounding area. Would love to hear if anyone could reply with information about the safety in and around the school.

Not sure why I wandered back onto these boards, but here I am so I’ll answer the question as I have first hand experience. Starting with the first post…Yes there is plenty to do. When the weather is nice everyone is outside, and when its not there is something going on be it a formal campus event or just people in the dorms. There are ways of getting around the city that does not require a car. I’m sure they mention it but just to reiterate, cabs are only $3 anywhere in the city, and the school has the busses going to the mall on weekends.

As for walking distance, the general rule of thumb is if you turn left you’re alright. A left turn out of campus brings you toward Hyde and a right brings you to the City of Poughkeepsie. Its the City of Poughkeepsie that you hear about that makes you worried. The school is located in the Town of Poughkeepsie and for the most part are alright. There are some iffy areas near the school but most aren’t that close. Within walking distance that is 100% close includes some of the best eateries I’ve ever had (in general not just at school). Just across the street and practically still on campus (Marist Security goes up and down these areas as well) are Red Fox Eatery, K&D Deli, and Campus Deli, and P Ridge (Pizza). In the big shopping center next to that is Giacomos Pizza as well as a McDonalds and Applebees (Applebees has trivia night every Thursday and it is always completely filled). It is helpful when at least one person in your group has a car Sophomore year because by that time you get bored of the immediate area and want to explore Hyde Park and the other areas a bit, but for Freshman year you’re more then fine. Also on rare occasion when there is an issue on campus (it happens at every single school I guarantee it) Marist Security is on top of it and make sure that students are safe first and foremost. Poughkeepsie PD is very close by as well as an added layer of comfort.

I have never for a second felt unsafe on campus whether it be 5 o’clock in the evening or 4 AM coming back form the library during finals week. If you don’t go out of your way to find trouble in the surrounding area you won’t run into issues there either.

For freshman year the biggest piece of advice is put yourself out there, meet people, and you’ll always have something to do.

Marist is rated top ten safest college in the country.

Crime on campus is non-existent as on-campus safety is very strong at Marist. There are both foot patrol security guards and security cars that drive around campus constantly. There are also security systems and officers located in the freshmen dorms, and all other dorms have locks. There are blue box security systems located around campus where you can press a button and speak with a security officer and wait at the location for security to come; however, I have never seen these being used and have never heard of them being used. There is also a program at Marist called SNAP (Student Nighttime Auxiliary Patrol) where groups of students walk from building to building at night and can walk you from point A to point B if you feel unsafe; again, I have never seen them being used and have never heard of them being used.

The city of Poughkeepsie is an area which you need to be cautious in; HOWEVER, Marist is far separated from the bad parts of Poughkeepsie, so unless you decide to wander miles away from campus by yourself at night, there is no risk to go off campus. There are security cars that drive around in the surrounding areas off campus, and I have never felt at risk going off campus at all. There are shops and restaurants within walking distance of the campus, and students with cars can visit any of the amazing things that are offered in the Hudson Valley (The Culinary Institute, the FDR home, the Vanderbilt Mansion, etc.). Hopefully this helps, Marist is a great school and a very safe school!

Marist is a very enclosed campus and as a junior here I have never felt unsafe on campus once. You’ll see security walking or driving around campus, we have the blue light system, and SNAP. SNAP is a student job where if you ever feel unsafe on campus they can escort you from one location to the other. Personally, I have never had to use any of those options but its nice to know they’re there if you need them. Theres a lot of food options, a Staples, Ocean State Job lot, Rite Aid and many other things across the street that students will safely walk to. I didn’t have a car for my first two years here and I never minded. There is always stuff to do on campus with the events college activities set up as well as clubs students get involved in.

Marist is a very safe school and the surrounding area gets a bad reputation. There are areas in Poughkeepsie you should not go by yourself but that is the same with almost every city. The area immediately surrounding Marist is really nice and has that small town feel. I didn’t have a car until my junior year and it never bothered me. Some of your friends may have cars to take you or you may make older friends that do as well. They have a taxi system implemented so its very cheap like 2 or 3 dollars to go anywhere within 5 miles, which consists of groceries stores, shopping centers and restaurants. They also have a shuttle on weekends that is a dollar which takes you to the mall and grocery store. But it is very safe to walk around to the restaurants that are close. The campus is very safe; whenever I walk around campus I always see campus security drivers walking around. They also have SNAP which is a group of students who will walk you to your dorm if it is late or you feel uncomfortable. Security patrols 24/7 so you don’t have to worry! They also come and check to make sure your door is closed and locked at night at least twice every night! Marist is a beautiful school and if you ever have any questions about safety on campus feel free to reach out to the Security office they would love to help!

Marist is a very safe school, and one that I feel comfortable walking around campus both during the day and at night. Just like any other college, Marist has the reputation to be in a sketchy city. Not once have I felt uncomfortable or in danger while being here at Marist College. Marist has blue lights underneath the walkway that connects the main campus, to upperclass men housing. The blue lights makes all Marist students safe. In addition, this underpass walkway is completely lit up when it gets dark out making it very safe. I am a freshman here at Marist College therefore I do not have a car on campus. In addition, Marist security is driving around 24/7 making sure that all their students are safe and there is no harm on campus. Marist ensures that all their students are safe at all times. Although I wish I could have a car, there is really no reason to have one. If you attend Marist you will find it evident that there is plenty of things to do without a car. The numerous taxis make it very convenient and easy to get from one location to the next. I personally go home very often, and I have to call taxis to take me to the train station. The taxi drivers are all very nice and make themselves available to help Marist students out. Marist College is a safe and beautiful campus that any student would be lucky to attend!
You’re right, Marist College’s campus is beautiful! The campus is very safe, with security guards walking around and monitoring buildings and entryways. If you feel uneasy about walking back at night, you can call security and someone can walk you back to your dorm. Marist does a lot to keep its students safe and comfortable in their surroundings, and never once have I felt worried about anything dangerous occurring.
I’m a sophomore and I don’t have a car, but there are a lot of things to do. Marist has over 80 clubs and organizations to join, and they’re all very active so there is pretty much always something to do. They also have trips to broadway shows, and they put on free movies every Friday and Saturday night. You don’t have to go off campus and you won’t be bored if you don’t. However there are things to do off campus. The Walkway Over the Hudson, various hiking trails, and the Poughkeepsie Galleria are some of the many things people venture off to on the weekends. There’s also a train station nearly 5 minutes away from campus and it’s easy to get to NYC — I’ve been twice already! People do walk off campus, especially for food or to get some necessities. My roommate even walks off campus to get her nails done and go hiking! Marist also has a bus for its students that costs $5 to ride on the entire semester, and runs on various days of the week. It’ll take you to the mall and grocery store among other places, which is pretty nice for someone like me who doesn’t have a car! Marist definitely does its best to accommodate students with and without cars, and I can say I’ve been pretty pleased so far.
Marist College is very safe! I have never felt unsafe on campus, and the Marist security does a fantastic job to ensure that all students feel that way. Marist has a very good reputation of making students feel very comfortable, and offer plenty of fun and safe activities to participate in both on campus and in the surrounding area!
There a re many nice neighborhoods around Marist. Towns such as Rhinebeck and red hook are only about a 15-20 minute drive and they have lots of nice shopping places and food options. There are also a lot of options across the street as well.
