**Skidmore Class of 2021! RD Official Thread**

@cavs4lf @Akqj10 @mamabe Skidmore’s policy: “Skidmore College provides need-based financial aid to most admitted students who demonstrate need, but the admission process is not need-blind for a small percentage of applicants.” What does that mean? To me, it’s like pregnancy: you’re either pregnant or you’re not. You are not need-blind if you are considering need for some and not for others. And the phrase “need-aware” sounds Orwellian – as my husband says, it means they’re aware of your need and don’t give a damn.

I thought “need-blind for a small percentage” meant they go through the applicants and the bottom 10% of applicants or so they consider it, thats how we heard it at their information session. At Mount Holyoke and Smith they describe it that way all well. If 1450 SAT, 3.91uw, 8 AP’s is now their bottom of the pile, great for all you guys. if it’s not, they were disingenuous.

Waitlisted. 30 ACT, 9 APS, 4.7 GPA. Lots of extracurriculars, president of a couple of those, lots of service at church, very creative essay, very involved in music community.

Accepted!!!
3.3 GPA
32 ACT
Lots of ec’s and had support from crew coach which def helped a ton

Still have yet to hear (NC), any idea what’s up or when to expect an email?

@LookAtMe did you apply for FA?

Really surprised I didn’t get in. I was waitlisted with a 3.75 gpa and a 30 act

@perrythep Yes but i had support from the crew coach in which his program is NCAA Division 3 and therefore holds a large amount of weight on my app as I basically got “recruited” unofficially

Has anyone from California heard anything?

quick (and dumb) question to anyone accepting a spot on the waitlist, are you putting the small card in an envelope or just putting a stamp on the card itself and mailing it?

@josevi did you have any safeties? Reed, Babson, Skidmore…not safeties.

Admissions not based on test scores…loads of high-stat kids not accepted to colleges with low acceptance rates.

To say that Skidmore isn’t generous with FA is to be misinformed.Ive had two sons attend Skidmore, one has graduated and one is a junior. This school has been amazingly generous to our middle class family, their offer was over $10,000 a year higher than any other my boys received.Skidmore has become increasingly popular, and so more selective,to view it as a safety is a mistake.Last year their yield of freshman was much higher than expected so I’m assuming they may have adjusted their numbers of offers in response. My son told me that this year their acceptance rate was below 20%.

@jamiecl I feel that Skidmore having below a 20% acceptance rate is a little outrageous but it did say on the acceptance packet that you were part of the most selective class in Skidmore history so maybe in the mid-low 20’s would seem reasonable considering last years acceptance rate was around 29%

Certainly not trying to be “outrageous” just repeating what my son had heard. Two years ago the acceptance rate was 37%,so my point is simply that it has become much harder to get that Yes folder.

@jamiecl Where did your son hear this information? Someone at admissions?

Hi just thought I would share that my son had gotten in ED 1 and received a very generous financial aid package. It’s possinlble that those that applied early found an advantage in this regard? We are very grateful for the package received and wish all of those awaiting a response and those who already heard a great year ahead either at Skidmore or a at a different school.

Congrats! Hopefully your son will enjoy his time at Skidmore as much as mine have. It’s a great little school with so many opportunities!

My son applied ED2 and got in. We decided to play it safe. He withdrew all his other applications. His friend who has similar stats and same small private school but much less in way of extracurriculars and less interesting person overall, nothing special, not only got into Skidmore RD (which he rubbed in to my son that it was his “back up” school), but also to Bates, Colby, Trinity and Conn Coll thus far, with Conn Coll offering him a half-merit scholarship when he doesn’t need any financial aid. We are all stupified. Our college counselor said that boys from the Northeast were wanted this year, but this seems really strange. Now my son is upset that he could have waited and applied RD and gotten into all these schools perhaps and had a choice. Or maybe this other boy somehow gamed the system?? I know that kids from NYC private schools are desirable, but could it account for this much of an advantage? His friend is making my son feel that he is going to an inferior school, Skidmore, since he will be going to Bates. I need some reassurance and comfort that we made the right choice. I think Skidmore is a good fit for my son, but now he is mad at me that I pushed him to apply ED.

@sca1999 you’re so arrogant. “Less interesting person overrall”. I’m assuming that since he isn’t your son you don’t know his whole life story. Talk about a first world problem, Skidmore is a gr8 school and so is Bates. Is that enough reassurance and comfort? Gosh
