@josevi - Reed is an incredible college and extraordinarily notable for its production of PhDs. I’m sorry if I misunderstood you, my point was only that Reed & Skidmore were NOT safeties (I didn’t realize you had been admitted to Reed.)
@trekslxchick I was not accepted, I was waitlisted, but it still one of my top choice schools. Sorry for the misunderstanding hehehe.
@josevi - Oh! So you can see that in fact Reed wasn’t a safety. Not your fault; sounds like you received some over-optimistic guidance. You just have to be really conservative when identifying safeties, especially if you are an international student that needs funding. Good luck to you.
Son accepted today!! Did not send SAT scores. Applied Early Decision and was deferred - got great financial aid packet.
Reed College is not a safety for the vast majority of students. Anyone considering Reed a safety ought to be applying to Stanford, Princeton and Yale with some degree of confidence.
Hi guys! I got accepted and I’m interested in political science. Wonder how is the political science program at Skidmore?
did anyone get a handwritten note in their packet?
Son received acceptance today in SF. Came with a handwritten note - just a sentence or two.
SAT: 1290
GPA: 3.8 UW in a very demanding IB program.
Gewin2017, Isn’t that the type of question that you ask BEFORE you decide which schools to apply to?
Yes. I apply to Skidmore because I think it has a strong Poli Sci program. I also got admitted by Trinity College so I wonder which school has better Poli Sci program.
My D was focused on a number of schools, including Skidmore and Bryn Mawr. She is a recruited athlete, and what ultimately tipped it in favor of Skidmore was the competitiveness of the soccer program (BMC struggles in athletics). The Bryn Mawr campus is awesome, awesome school and we all love the Main Line area. But Saratoga is really nice too, the schools seemed fairly comparable academically and, as I said, the pull to play in the Liberty League with a more competitive program tipped it in favor of Skidmore. That, and her visit to Skidmore was a very good one. She also had a good visit at Bryn Mawr, but in the end, she could see herself more at one over the other. You can’t account for that “feeling” you know?
I honestly couldn’t find a bad thing to say about BMC if I tried. I’m a big believer and fan of the Seven Sisters, and I’m surprised that none of my three girls wound up at one. We also liked Mount Holyoke a lot too.
D was recruited very aggressively by Brandeis. Boston location a plus, but the neighborhood is dreary, as is the campus. We couldn’t get over how run down the campus seemed. Brandeis is a great school, but it wasn’t a good fit for her. She’s like her Dad; our physical environments matter a lot to us. We have to like where we are.
I just got my acceptance! 3.75/1400. I am a US applicant. I really like Skidmore and showed them a lot of love. My friends with 33 and 35 ACT scores did not get in.
@hopefulom , we considered all of those things too. My sense about rep and grad school is that similarly accomplished students at Skidmore and BMC will have the same opportunities. I’ve heard BMC can be fairly rigorous, and then I’ve heard that’s overblown. I really don’t know. I think any fairly selective LAC is going to bring some rigor, so there’s that. I know the kids who attend Whitman here in the NW talk about rigor a lot … I don’t think Whitman is an easy place at which to earn straight As, so I expect that same is true for the grouping of schools you’re looking at, including Skidmore.
It is hard to judge to the point where you can make choices based on marginal differences.
@WesmoreDad I think you’ll be happy with your choice. My daughter was a recruited athlete and is completing her senior year at Skids. The Liberty League is competitive, and the demands placed upon student athletes are significant, but the school does a terrific job of balancing priorities and the athletic department is extremely proactive in identifying and addressing potential sources of friction between athletic commitments, exams, course work, paper writing etc. We found it to be a place where our student athlete could be just that, a challenged and engaged student and a competitive athlete in an elite DIII program.
So I guess Skidmore was a lot more competitive this year than I thought, my bad.
@halcyon4ever , that’s wonderful to hear! I’ll pass that on to my D.
If it wouldn’t compromise your privacy, may I ask which sport your D played at Skidmore?
Thanks again for the positive input. Great to hear.
I pm’d you
@halcyon4ever , thank you!
Is there a groupme for admitted students?
Accepted from Thailand! Also, do international students just get an email or do we get the package as well? If yes, did anyone get theirs yet?
