Skidmore International Students

Hey all potential Skidmore freshmen! I realize that there isnt anything much on international students applying to collges, more so Skidmore. Where are you guys? I am a little nervous and am excited to hear what admissions have to say.

The international community is growing and it would be cool for me to be apart of the growth.

Again, WHERE ARE ALL YOU GUYS?!

Hi @jking2jam!

I’m an international (from Brazil) applying to Skid. =D
To be honest, i’m not very hopeful… my counselor told me they don’t offer a lot of aid for internationals… and sometimes they prefer to simply deny someone rather than accept and not offer enough.

Where are you from?

Hi there. I am from Pakistan.
Inaperfectworld really? That’s just sad. They’ll reject me I guess cz I did ask for quite a lot of aid.

Btw I am from Pakistan.

Hey Inaperfectworld and Rme123! I am from Jamaica. I am also asking for a lot of aid. College board gives the impression that Skidmore does offer quite a lot of aid, so the counselor’s remark in rather interesting. Do you mind saying your stats? Maybe she her statement was passively foreshadowing…

yeaaah Rme123, i’ve heard it a lot among other int students, and it makes sense.

but in the end, what is worse? to get into a school you like, but not be able to pay/receive enough aid or to be rejected?

although i’m scared as hell of being rejected, i think it would be worse to be all ‘ooh, if only i won the lottery…’

where else are you applying, people, and what have you heard so far?

i’ve been accepted to Earlham, Lewis & Clark, Agnes Scott and rejected at Franklin & Marshall… waiting for another seven schools to answer and DYING.

The whole getting into colleges that one like and not being able to attend is really a pain tho. Rejection can be just as bad… I got into St. Olaf College and Berea College, Drew University, and St. Marys University…

jking2jam,

i’ve finished IB (7 is the highest grade) and gotten: Eng A2 HL 6, HIS HL 6, BIO HL 6, Math SL 5, Spanish 7, my own language 6. I have a pretty mediocre SAT (around 1800) and did the IELTS instead of Toefl, got 8,5 out of 9.

lots of ECs, but they are kind of different on how things work on the US, don’t know how they will judge. I think I had strong essays, but that’s so subjective.

I did get all the aid I needed from the schools that accepted me, but i’m not sure how i’ll do in more competitive/selective schools.

I have some friends at St. Olaf, are you planning to attend? which one is your favorite do far?

Oh, ok. We are pretty similar I guess. I have exactly 1800 SAT. 3.73 GPA Good CXC and OK CAPE results…bunch of extra curricular and leadership ish…

essays are good. Though for Skid’s supp I used the spaced allotted on the online common app…doesn’t really allow you to say much…

ST Olaf is indeed my favorite so far!! I got a full 2. I may probably go there though, I was going to do ED2 but my counselor was nice to tell me that they give out more money in RD, and that she wants me to get as much as possible. I am just weighing my options…

which schools have you heard from so far?

‘i’ve been accepted to Earlham, Lewis & Clark, Agnes Scott and rejected at Franklin & Marshall… waiting for another seven schools to answer and DYING.’

I’m still waiting for Occidental, Scripps, Reed, Bowdoin, Mt. Holyoke, Smith, and of course, Skidmore.

i’ve never told this to anybody but right now i feel really scared of choosing a college based on info gathered online. i’ve spent so much time researching dining hall menus, internships and all that jazz… that now i feel like i can’t choose based on what i’ve read, because in the end all colleges are very similar. :/

OH! for some strange reason I thought it was Rme123 who replied initially…U could of said you posted it already…I would have gotten it. lol. It was nice of you to type it all over again. (or copy and paste. :stuck_out_tongue: )

Did those schools give? I actually looked into them, but feared that I would get little aid.

Be thankful that you have choices. Many out there do not have choices…some dont even have acceptances.

I have been accepted by Drexel, RIT, DePauw, St John’s (Minnesota) but none gave me a 100% scholarship. I am quite worried cz I can’t attend any of those, even though I love Drexel. Still awaiting Skidmore, Bryn Mawr, Bucknell, MHC, trinity college, W&L and Carleton.

Oh, ok. Everything will work. Dont worry about it.

i copied and pasted, don’t worry! =)

i think there is no reliable source for what is a school that gives/gives little aid, actually… we intls are so lost sometimes. :/

indeed, my counselor told me to apply to Earlham because they’re generous with aid, and my best friend (int as well)received awesome aid when she applied last year to L&C.

and you know Rme123, you can always try rolling admissions. I know there are some schools that offer aid even for applications in mid-June… but that’s just your last resort (:

and you SHOULD try to negotiate on aid. if you have acceptances you have good cards to play with.

:) I dont want to sound like I am digging deep into your personal …but when you say indeed for Earlham…what the range in which you received aid? I know some people applying next year, and would love for them to know where they stand…

"Earlham gives partial financial aid awards with a current maximum value of one-half tuition. " I think is this is what made me not apply…it on their website…Mybe its just a little trick. lol. It surely got me!

i’ve gotten 37,930. i have an outside scholarship of 10k, so they knew about this scholarship and just covered the rest of tuition, room board. Earlham actually has pretty low costs in comparison with New England/West Coast schools.

Earlham College Costs 2012-13 Estimated Expenses
Tuition $39,200 Books and Supplies $1,000
Room $ 3,990 Personal Expenses $1,000
Board $ 3,920 Travel $500 - 1,000
Campus Improvements Fee $500
Student Activity Fee $320
Total $47,930

Nice. I will pass this on to some friends. and Congrats!

Thanks! (:

and best of luck to your friends. Earlham is a really special place (although i think i won’t attend).

Why not? You see yourself getting into much better schools? Or you prefer to pay some cash on the others?

I am a proponent of a paying a little extra for a potential better education…
