Skiing at Tufts

Massachusetts has a lot of skiers. Accomplished skiers head north on the weekends to Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine. There is some skiing for beginners in Massachusetts. Driving time varies from about 2 to 3.5 hours depending on the mountain.

Skiing is a club sport at Tufts. I think they ski in Vermont.

The Tufts Mountain Club (TMC) owns a "loj" in New Hampshire that some students use for ski trips to New Hampshire. TMC also organizes some ski trips.

in one of the threads in this forum, I saw in a compare and contrast with another college someone quickly pointing out that Tufts owned some sort of place to camp in the (local?) mountains. Is this it? Or what is this camping place?

here it is @slitheytove said this
“Tufts students have a camping lodge in the nearby mountains.”

Yup, that’s the one. Students who do Tufts Wilderness Orientation (TWO, one of the optional but wonderful pre-orientation programs) stay there iirc.

how far is the NH ‘loj’? from Tufts? Isnt NH faraway? Does anyone have a link to the pre-orientation pgms? did anyone’s kids do this pgm?

EDIT
looks like it is about 2 -2.5 hrs by car, correct?
<a href=“Google Maps”>https://■■■■■■/maps/gWEoD

With respect to the pre-orientation programs, I highly recommend attending any one of them, if there are openings and time/ logistics allow. My D made her closest friends during FOCUS.

The Loj is two hours away by car. TMC has at least one minivan that shuttles students back and forth.

http://www.tuftsmountainclub.org/loj/

There is a 3,400 acre urban forest about two miles from Tufts where TMC runs some events. Not as spectacular as the Loj/White Mountains, but more convenient.

Link on preorientation - highly recommended - my child went on FIT and is now a counselor.

Mine did TWO and loved it, rain and all. Plus, you get to move in early.

thanks for the info and tips. what is TMC? FIT, FOCUS - what are the differences? Is there some kind of transportation to the urban forest?

For the place in NH, is there a heated lodge or structure there or is tent only?
is it open year round?
is it owned by TUfts or just available to Tufts on a reservation basis ?
Do classes or groups ever go up there?

TMC is the Tufts Mountain Club. It is one of the bigger clubs on campus. They manage the Loj and at least one minivan (I think there is more than one). The pre-orientations are organized around areas of interest - you pick one that sounds like the most fun to you, so you get a jump-start on building friendships with people with similar interests -before you have to start worrying about classes. It is sort of like a summer camp. TMC will periodically organize events in the urban forest, for which they would use the minivan. Otherwise, you can bike or drive.

Here is The TMC website - lots of info on events, trips, history of the Loj…

http://www.tuftsmountainclub.org/

It is two structures
I believe it is heated by woodstove (based on pictures)
It is open for the entire school year, except when there are special functions (I do not know if it is open over the summer)
It is owned by Tufts
Individuals and groups go there, I do not know about courses
