If I got a 5 on the Physics C Mechanics test, would it be a bad idea to skip 7A and go ahead to Physics 7B?

I have no prior programming experience, how useful is CS10? Also, bad idea to just jump into CS61A?

I'm intending for first semester to be:
Math 53
RCB Course (whichever one isn't filled up by Phase II)
Physics 7A/7B
CS10/CS61A

Out of curiosity, have you registered for Phase I yet?

Just asking since 7B is practically full and you’d be stuck with the TR 8AM lecture with the MW 8AM lab/discussion at this point.

You can preview CS 61A, reading the book and doing the exercises and examples on the free language interpreter:

[CS61A Home Page](CS61A Home Page)

They are changing from Scheme to Python for the fall, but the CS concepts from the Scheme using course should be applicable to the Python using course (the books and language interpreters for both are free on the web).

7B as far as I remember doesn’t really tap that much into classical physics if at all. I think you’ll be fine jumping straight in. It’s just a few weeks of gases and then the rest all electrical and magnetic.

not to burst your bubble, but 7B is completely full at this point, did you not attend CalSO? Though, if you sign up now, you’ll probably get off the waitlist once classes start. You can more than likely handle it if you got a 5 on Physics C.

That being said, as far as I know, 80-90% of CS61A have programming experience, but judging from the materials being taught in class, it is feasible for someone to self-study a little during the summer and handle the class well (especially since the books are online).

Just take 7B in spring.

Physics 7 series has no waitlist.

oh f- my bad totally forgot about that, sorry

… technically there are still 10 seats in the 2nd 7B section but with the lame lab/dis times that I mentioned before.

Or am I wrong?

how do u skip 7A? I tot it can’t be fulfilled with AP

Although CS 61A is recommended for students with programming experience, it’s mainly an elementary course and you really don’t need CS 10.

Physics majors cannot skip 7A with AP credit.

College of Engineering majors may skip 7A with a 5 on AP Physics C Mechanics.

College of Chemistry majors may skip 7A with a combined score of 9 on AP Physics C Mechanics and E&M.

Students who took a college course that articulates to 7A (see [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) for community college course articulation) may skip 7A.

As a general rule, don’t skip. Use this opportunity to pad your gpa if you’re good at mechanics.

Thanks for the replies,
Yes, I’ve already registered for 7A for Phase I but that was before finding out AP scores. I think I will just retake Mechanics to try and boost my first semester GPA. As for CS61A, thanks ucbalumnus, I’ll check it out
