Skipping Calculus II, Taking Calculus III as an econ major

I’m transferring to Columbia this fall from USC where I took Math 118, an applied Calculus 1 course for economics/business. The econ department accepted the course and recommended that I still take Calculus 2 even though it is not required for the major, but Calc 3 is required. Thus, is it necessary to take Calc 2 for me to take and do well in Calc 3? I don’t want to spend time taking classes that I otherwise don’t need to take.

See if you can get a copy of the syllabus. If your Calc 3 only includes partial derivatives, maybe you could skip Calc 2, but if your Calc 3 also includes multiple integrals, Calc 2 would probably be necessary for that. Ask an advisor or the professor before doing anything drastic.

Mine covered both parts but it was in engineering.

It may be too late now but register for Calc 2 and Calc 3. During the 2 weeks of shopping for classes go to both classes and figure out which is the best fit. That’s part of the reason why they do the shopping period to figure out the correct level of some classes for you.
