Skipping Class

Sorry for the lame question, but I was wondering if it's alright to skip class just once? How bad will it affect my track record? I've been in school for two years and today is the first time that I just feel like garbage and will also be a first in not going to a class. Any advice? Or should I just suck it up and go?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

What does the syllabus say about absences? What about pop quizzes? Are there any likely consequences to missing one class meeting?

Is there anything scheduled today that you can't afford to miss? Do you have to give a presentation? Do you understand the material to be presented today? Can you get notes from someone else?

Is today atypical for you, or is it just that your ongoing frustration has finally gotten to the point that you can't handle with it? Do you have the discipline to really let this be a one-time-only thing, or are you likely to figure that if it's okay x times, then it's okay x+1 times?

Are you sick? Can you go to student health and document that?

How big is the class? How much goodwill are you likely to lose if the teacher notices you're not there? How much goodwill do you need.

How long is the class? Is it a sixty-minute discussion section or a ninety-minute lecture or a three-hour seminar? (How much of the total semester's work would you be missing, in other words?)

I don't think cutting a class is necessarily a horrible thing or even an especially bad thing, but a lot depends on you, the class you're actually in, and the circumstances surrounding this. Ultimately it's going to be a judgment call that only you can make. You sound like a pretty conscientious student, so I figure you're probably capable of making a good choice.

If you do skip, I hope you have a good day off. (Not good enough that you never go back, of course, but good.) If you don't skip, at least it's almost the weekend.

It's a 50 minute Sociology class, so I guess I don't have too much to stress about. Most of the time we just have random class discussions. Never have I skipped before that's why I was getting all jumpy and paranoid. By the way, I'll make sure not to turn this into a habit. Thanks for the good lengthy reply too.

One class is alright. Especially late in the week and being what i presume is a basic Soc class. It's a slippery slope though -- some people get addicted and start doing it every week. Nevertheless, it really can't hurt, and you can always explain why you were absent if you need to.

Now missing senior classes with 5 people in them... that's nasty.

Oh man this kid is crazy. Skipping class, what would your parents think of that?

They'd probably kill me to be honest with you. Asian parents and education is usually not a good combination.

Hahahahaha...wow, just...wow.

just one class!? dude I skip classes all the time and I do just fine. Of course some classes you can't which in that case I don't.

Yep.

If you really do feel terrible, don't drag yourself to class unless you know you really need to. Email the professor, apologize, briefly explain, let him know that you'll get the notes from a classmate, and ask if any other info came up that you should know about (handouts, due dates, etc). Get the notes from a friend. If your professor wants you to get a note from health services, make an appointment ASAP (unless you come bounding through the door saying "I'm supposed to be in class right now," you shouldn't have too much trouble). If he'll want documentation, though, this'll probably be stated on the syllabus.

I went to a LAC where attendance was usually pretty obvious. If I had to miss a larger lecture, then I'd be less likely to email...I'd probably talk to a friend first and talk to the prof only if it seemed necessary. So, judgment call. If you're feeling guilty, though, an email might help you out. The response will likely be "Don't worry...no new info...feel better!"

Take a nap, enjoy the free time, and feel better :)

its really not a big deal. obviously skipping class all the time is a problem. but there are definitely times when its not a big deal to skip, especially you're sick. about once a quarter i take a day where i only go to one or two classes (one where attendance is required or just if i feel like i need to be there) simply to get caught up on hw if i'm having a really stressful week.

what a ****ing pussy

I skip classes all the time, just make sure you know what classes to skip =P

For example, it won't really matter if you skip your political science class where the professor lectures about the same topics every class. You don't, however, want to skip two organic chemistry classes in a row...yikes I'm in trouble.

man, if I had a dollar for all the times I skipped class in undergrad (and the first two years of med school too) I'd probably have well over a $1000. Hung over, getting drunk, ill, slept in, stayed up late, had another assignment to work on, shacking with girl, having a girl shack with me, road trips, having friends from other schools come visit, or going to the gym instead (that was my most frequent excuse for skipping pharmacology last year) were all typical reasons...

Is this thread a joke?

edit: Upon rereading the original post, it must be a joke. And even if it's not, please let me think it is so I can sleep at night.

dood, are you okay? haha more power to ya bro
I hope you decided to skip.

[q] Hung over, getting drunk, ill, slept in, stayed up late, had another assignment to work on, shacking with girl, having a girl shack with me, road trips, having friends from other schools come visit, or going to the gym instead [/q]
^^all legitimate reasons to skip class. i'd like to add "just didn't feel like going" and "didn't do the assigned reading" to the list.

just skip class STRATEGICALLY. bigger classes, lectures where the professor just quotes what's in the textbook, days you don't have anything to turn in/won't have a quiz or something, etc. ==>all good classes to skip.

i don't know why my quote isn't working.

You have to spell out the whole word, don't you?

In college, one of the requirements for my civil engineering degree was to take Waves & Optics, Biology, or Orgo. I read a little further and found out it was an ABET accreditation requirement, and that all we really needed to do was to take a two-hundred-level science course, so I got the dean to agree to a bunch of us taking "The Planets". The professor put his notes online, along with review questions for the exams, which were identical to the exams. I ended up never going to class, except on exam days. Skipped every single lecture.

When the powers that be found out I had done this, they came with sticks and beat me. Once I was bruised and bleeding on the ground, they took everything out of my dorm room, piled it into a shopping cart, and told me to have a nice life, because skipping class is just not something that someone in college does. I've spent the last five years roaming the back alleys of my city with my shopping cart, wondering where I went wrong. (In retrospect, I think it was the "skipping class" thing.) I'm only posting this because I sneaked up behind a businessman, clubbed him with my shoe, stole his laptop, and am swiping internet from a local dry cleaner.

No, I'm actually totally lying to you. I'm just taking a break at work from designing this here skyscraper to cruise CC and drink my latte. One sociology class? Nobody's gonna miss you; don't sweat it.

^ hahahaha
