What is your advice on not going to class? I'm sick right now (not horribly so, but bad enough where dragging my sorry ass out of bed at 4:30 am to get to school on time is excruciating.) I'm a commuter, and on Fridays, my first class is at 7:30 am, and my last class ends at 12:00 pm. I'm exhausted, I'm behind in my studies, and nothing really important happens on Fridays in my schedule anyway. The only problem is that one of my professors tests solely from his lectures, so if I miss a day, I might be screwed. Also, another professor takes attendance and uses it "only if your grade is on the verge" so I don't know what the hell that means. I haven't missed any classes in any courses so far.

On the other hand, I'm halfway through my first round of mid-term exams (got a 97% on one, a 91% on the other, and 92% on the third... the average grades for the classes were 72%, 69%, and 56%, respectively), and I really need to study for my remaining few. I'm just too exhausted to sit on a train for 2 hours tomorrow, and I feel that I wouldn't be productive -- I fell asleep in psych today.

What would you do? Do you ever just take a day off when nothing really important is happening and you're exhausted/behind anyway?

I think you shouldn't be commuting if you live that far from campus.

Also, could you just get lecture notes from someone in your class?

Email all your professors and tell them you won't be in class because you're sick, particularly the one that takes attendance. They will understand and not hold it against you when handing out grades.

I live about 30 minutes away by car/45 by train, but I get up at 4:30 am, shower and get ready by 6:30 am, and then give myself an hour to get to the school, get to the class, etc. by 7:30 am. Also, commuting wasn't a choice... no on-campus housing was available for about 40% of the class.

You're doing pretty well in your classes...you can afford to take the occasional mental health day from the classes that you just took your midterms for.

The commute is reasonable but what's with taking 2 hours to get ready? You don't have to look your best every day. I couldn't function having to wake up that early.

If you decide to skip, just shoot the professors a polite e-mail telling them you will not be attending due to illness.

side note I don't get why everyone assumes the getting up two hours before leaving means one is preening and getting ready that whole time. I don't know if the OP does or not, but I've heard that statement about my getting out of bed at 5 to 5:30 am for an 8:30 class. I relax and read the paper or go on the internet until it's light out, go for a run to get energy, then 'shower and get ready by' 7:30am - as the OP worded it. So saying that does not necessarily mean someone is preening, making themselves up and spending an hour picking out the perfect outfit. Just saying.
