Skipping Latin I?

I signed up for Latin II Honors next year, conditional on the fact that I get sufficient tutoring and can pass the Level I final.

So, what do you guys think? I'm currently in my third year of Spanish if that helps. Do you think skipping a whole level is too much? And if not, what books would you recommend? The current class relies on worksheets and not textbooks...

Yes. I really would NOT skip level 1. Skipping level 2 would probably be a lot easier-you'll have a foundation for learning more grammar and you could probably do it on your own. Latin is a lot more difficult than spanish, even though there is no pronunciation

Latin I, definitely don't skip. It sounds like the current class relies mostly on teacher instruction, and that is invaluable.

Skip Latin 2, if you must.

I skipped Latin 1 and I am just fine. Honestly, I think you don't need it, esp. since you are in Spanish. Read Wheelock's Latin... all of it. You will do perfectly.

I disagree with snoopy. Latin is a breeze. It's just english, with declensions! But seriously, Latin 1 was fun, but a joke. Get Oxford. Best instructional book I've ever had for ANY language.

I also think spanish was harder for latin. But I also have a great innate hatred for the spanish language (I hate how rapid and angry sounding it can be!)

I took latin 1 and I wouldn't skip it if I were you. I mean maybe if you work really really hard over the summer to self study it could work out, but I just don't advise.

I disagree with sigurros... Latin 1 seems just memorizing the noun declensions and verb conjugations... I have faith you can spend a few weeks tops to memorize 2 charts, and then you're all set to go. (try to learn some vocab, too... but you can pick it up by studying a little harder at the beginning of Latin 2)

Eep. You guys are making me nervous... I'm getting conflicting reports from school, too. Some are telling me that it's really easy and I'll have no issues with it, but others are telling me that it's an awful idea...

okay - if you were just starting any second language, then I can see the argument for taking Latin1... however, you have already taken spanish, so Latin should be really easy to transition to anyway

idamayer, do you even take latin? "it seems"...well, if you're not an expert at grammar points, it won't just be memorizing charts. Latin isn't just something you could easily pick up on your own and master

I took Spanish I and II in Junior High...I decided to take Latin as my FL in HS because I thought it would be interesting (and I still do). Honestly, Spanish didn't help me that much - I even took honors, I mean it'll help but not in a significant amount. I'm in Latin III Honors and I think if it wasn't for my solid foundation in Latin I...I wouldn't have had it so easy in Latin II and now. Thankfully I have had the same teacher over the years and she's amazing.

I agree with the poster above - skipping Latin II is easier (imo) than Latin I. As my teacher always says - you have to stand on terra firma.

I wouldn't recommend skipping Latin I, because I think its too important to skip. I took French IV and Latin at the same time, and they only French really helped me with was like a few cognate words and getting used to conjugate verbs. If you really want to skip a class, take Latin I and then skip Latin II. In my school, Latin I is considered much harder than Latin II.

Don't skip it. As an AP Latin student, I can tell you EVERYTHING is rooted in Latin I. It's not just memorizing charts. You need to understand why the endings from those charts are used. Plus, unless you are really dedicated, it's unlikely that you will be doing any translation over the summer which is CRUCIAL. Latin is not conversational. Once you get to the upper levels, it's all about the reading. If you're a frosh or soph, I would recommend taking Latin I and skipping Latin II. You'll have time to make it up to AP.

N.B. I went to a middle school where Latin was not offered, so I had to start high school in Latin I while my friends from a different middle school were in Latin II. I still took I, II, and III and now I'm in AP with those very same friends, whooping them on tests and written translations.

See, I'm currently a Sophomore and at my school Latin I is a regular class, II and III have honors and 4 and 5 are AP. If I were to take Latin I, then the highest level I can get to is Lv II. My school requires that you take Lv II in order to take AP 4 and Lv III for AP 5. It's annoying... Plus, I really don't want to get stuck with all the freshmen in Lv I

See what you can learn this summer. If you feel prepared and pass the test, you're in Latin II. If not, take Latin I.

I know I'm reiterating, but you simply cannot skip the first level of ANY language.
The first level is basically grammar/vocab, and it's extremely hard to cram that into a summer. If you're that set, take Latin I next year and the year after that Latin II/III as an elective (my school let's you take normal classes as electives...check your school's policy).

I'm pretty sure we can't do that... core classes are always two semesters long and they contain tons of prerequisites.
