Sleep

Our schools joining trend of starting an hour later in the day and giving more time to unwind between study hours and bed

Our school requires the kids to be in their dormhalls at 10:30 and in their rooms at midnight. The classes are a college like schedule so my daughter has 2 ‘sleep in’ mornings where she does not start class until around 10am. She is loving that. The trade off is that some days she is not done with class until 4pm.

There is not a ‘lights out’, but the internet gets shut down at 1am, I believe, in hopes of geting kids to give up and go to bed at that point!

On weekends, do your kids sleep in?

T

Internet cuts off at 1am! What kind of heaven boarding school is your daughter attending?

At Deerfield the internet for underclassmen turns off at 11 and for upperclassmen I’m pretty sure it turns off at 1am…how is it at Lawrenceville?

I don’t know yet…but my friend says it turns off at 11:15 for sophs. Not sure about upperclassmen (does this refer to Juniors and Seniors?) though.

@EnemyOfTheSun…my child is at NC School of Science and Math. The school accepts only 11th and 12th graders and is fully residential. 1am seems like a stretch to me too. But when on campus last week as school started and getting work done on our child’s computer, an IT person said their theory is that if the kids are smart enough to get in the school they should be smart enough to turn off their laptops and get some sleep! Nevertheless, the powers that be shut it down at 1am in an effort to be parental!

The other things we hear about sleep there is that the student motto is "Study, Sleep, Socailize…pick two’. Of course, sleep often is the first thing to go. Sigh.

Upperclassmen does refer to both juniors and seniors at Deerfield (I know every school has different terms).
The “study, sleep, socialize” motto does have a lot of relevance especially at boarding school where you live with most if not all of your friends. I think that what it comes down to is time management: knowing whether it would be more beneficial to spend 30 extra minutes studying or to just “hang out” at a certain point in time is all a part of not having parents around to make sure you’re doing everything that you’re supposed to. It’s about finding a balance!

Choate’s policy is:

Third formers: 6AM - 9:45PM
Fourth formers: 6AM - 11PM
Fifth formers: 6AM - 12AM
Sixth formers: 6AM - 1AM

And, yes, sleep seems to be something teenagers don’t value.

With many kids having smart phones these days, internet shut-off times are quickly becoming irrelevant. The reality is no one will be supervising your kids 24/7 so time management skills are important. If they don’t show up to boarding school with them, the majority are smart enough to figure it out during their first year. Many kids, however, won’t be getting 8 or more hours of sleep per night except for on the weekends.
