Sleeping

Just a quick question. What time do you guys sleep?

I occasionally sleep at 10-10:30 because I have to get up at 4:30. My roommate is apparently pissed about it. He makes a lot of noise at times but most times I sleep through but other times I don’t. I try my best to be quiet in the morning but just a single step literally wakes him up.

Is it bad to sleep this early? I mean honestly, I understand if it was the weekend, but if I can sleep, I’d sleep.

He has to wake up at 5 MWF and complains how tired and sleepy he is when he’s staying up watching Netflix or hanging with his girlfriend.

Opinions?

If you didn’t sleep that early you’d be getting like four hours of sleep and probably die or something. Screw that. If I had to get up at 4:30 I’d be going to bed around 7.

I don’t have class until noon this quarter, so I tend to go to bed around 12-1 and get up around 8-9 unless I have something else I need to get to that requires me to get up earlier. In a typical quarter where my earliest class is at 9 or 10, I usually go to bed at around 11-12 and get up at around 7-8. And for weekends, if I don’t have anything planned the next morning (including no work I need to get to quickly) I’ll stay up until I’m tired and wake up whenever I wake up; usually this translates to around 12-2 and 8-10, respectively.

I’ve always been one to ensure I get 8 hours of sleep each night whenever possible. If I absolutely have to I’ll go as low as 5 or 6, but any lower than that has to be a pretty good reason for me to be cutting down on my sleep that much. As such, when I go to bed depends on what I have to get done before going to bed and what time I need to get up the next morning.

In your case, do what you have to do. If it were me having to get up at 4:30, I’d probably be going to bed at 9 at the latest, 10 if I really had to stay up to get work done. You know your body best, so go to bed at a time that ensures you get however much sleep you need.

Earplugs seem like a good idea for both of you.

I’m still in HS, but I am a morning person and run a similar schedule to you (8:30/9:00-4:00). I agree, earplugs may do it for both of you…

This seems like the right place to ask this question - DD is a sophomore in college. She is a night owl and likes to sleep in late. She isn’t very active and is tired a lot. She often naps. I told her if she had a better sleep schedule and exercised a bit more she may not be so tired during the day but she tells me ‘everyone’ naps in college. I didn’t know anyone who did back when I was in college but of course that was a long time ago and things change. So I’d like to know, do you nap, and if you don’t, do you know others in college who do - maybe not every day but a few times a week? Is this weird or normal, as she claims?

@myjanda Yes, napping is very common. Something college kids are infamous for–they like to say that college is like going back to pre-school in that it’s acceptable to nap again at school. I personally don’t usually take naps unless I don’t feel well, but I know plenty of people who do. My school’s student center always has students napping in the middle of the day, sprawled across chairs and couches. It’s definitely not weird, though I would imagine that having a better sleep schedule would prevent her from being so tired.

Thanks @ce527m, that makes me feel better. When I was in college I may have napped once or twice after pulling an all nighter, or serious party, but that was unusual. Glad to see my daughter is ‘normal’ in that regard though yes, a better sleep schedule and some exercise would go a long way!

It is important to have as regular a sleep schedule as possible and for enough hours. This is important for physical and mental health. Whether or not it is going to be early and getting up early or going to bed late and getting up late doesn’t matter as much as regularity and a decent number of hours. Naps are fine as long as they don’t interfere with nighttime sleeping. In many parts of the world people, adults and kids alike, take a short nap after lunch everyday.
