i saw some posters on here say that stanford campus is kinda "sleepy"/dull/not much going on. yet it's ranked by princeton review as one of the top "campuses with lots to do". what do you guys think? is it often dead/sleepy or is it usually lively/active?

Well from when I visited the guy giving the tour said it was a more chill atmosphere. But of course there’s always something going on somewhere.

not much going on?
Stanford is basically a touring course for California

There’s stuff to do if you look for it. No one is going to come to your room and invite you out all the time (unless you’re just that amazing at life).

What they mean is that the town itself can be boring, isn’t super exciting. But the campus is a ton of fun. Stanford kids make their own fun, from scavenger hunts in San Fran and clubs … SOOO much to do! Actually, a ton of stanford students refer to first year as “Camp Stanford” because it’s so much fun!

lol yeah but i mean, does the overall atmosphere feel kinda dull or more active? like when i visited usc, it felt more chill/not too much going on, but ucla supposedly always has stuff going on and is very lively.

edit: that’s good to hear, whoaness! also, is there anything to do in palo alto or do people have to go to san fran for city-type fun?

WhiteCadillac: Well it really, trully depends on what you’re interested in. I’m sure you can find places to hang out with friends, movie theaters, restaurants and the sort in Palo Alto. If you want museums/galleries you can find them at Carmel or San Fran and for a more big city time though you would probably have to head to san fran. But Palo Alto is a college town, so I doubt you can’t find SOMETHING to do there.

ah ok! it’s good to know there are at least restaurants, movie theater, etc there. and you can just walk there from campus right? it’s safe and you don’t need a car?

as for san fran and carmel, is there any convenient way to get there without a car? how long does it take?

sorry for all the questions!!

whitecadillac there’s always the train (:

but I’m not sure how long it would take. Not that long though I’m assuming.

It really depends on the traffic if you’re driving. It should only take 45 mins to one hour to San Fran and about 2 - 2.5 to carmel.

Just remember, freshmen are not permitted to have cars on campus. There is a train station just off campus: 10 min walk or free campus bus ride.

There are something like 600 student clubs. Probably something for everyone. The dorms have a lot of activities too. The campus itself has a feel of motion. There are always students going from one place to another, hanging around in groups and there always seems to be students playing something on the field behind our D’s dorm. According to our D, if you are bored, you’re not doing something right.

Emgamac: Agreed. There’s just no reason to be bored at a place so full of life. In fact my interviewer just couldn’t stop gushing about everything Stanford has to offer. Her words: “Cardinals play hard and study hard.” I know her job is to sell Stanford, but I def felt an air of sincerity in her voice when she said that.
True there will be times where the campus might SEEM sleepy… like for example, finals, midterms, when people have gone home for vaca. But on a regular day you shouldn’t find it difficult to find something fun to do.

the caltrain makes it very easy to go to san fran or to san jose

once ur in SF, you can always to go (gasp) berkeley if you think theres more happening on their campus.

but i have never heard of anyone being bored at stanford.

There is so much going on, I wish I had more time to actually participate in all the events I’m interested in!

These sentiments are often echoed by my friends as well, so I’m not the only one who feels this way :)
