My daughter was invited to SLS, but called the other day to decline. The individual she talked to indicated that at the time of her call, they only had half of the spots filled for this summer's two sessions.

Is this normal, or is USMA having more trouble this year with interest?

Really, you shouldn't feel badly. There are so many things that go into these decisions and let's face it...how much do they really know about you?

Lots of good folks get rejected every day. Don't forget, West Point is pretty darn selective...even for SLS. If it wasn't, the classes would be full.

"The individual she talked to indicated that at the time of her call, they only had half of the spots filled for this summer's two sessions."

Tim, I do not believe that that information is correct. WP always has far more applicants than it can accept for SLS and I believe that most slots were filled before the deadline for applications closed. Who did your daughter speak to?

Animalmother: Don't feel bad. WP only accepts 800 candidates for SLS (naval academy accepts 1800!). It is a highly competitive process and does not mean that you will not be accepted to the academy. Good luck!

This doesnt exactly pertain to the subject, but i'm just wondering, when we first applied online for SLS we chose a "major" of sorts, and I never got information about that in the letters I got from west point.....do they tell us when we get there?

First off - I also second the idea that either your daughter misinterpreted what the admissions official said, or perhaps the official was simply talking unclearly. Regardless, I know that both sessions last year had more people that we were supposed to (something like 907 out of 900, I believe - could be wrong though).

Also, requiem, the "majors" you speak of are classes you'll take at SLS itself. You should have numbered them (or something) and then you get your first three choices they could have fit you in.
