Small classes/courses for freshmen?

Are there any small freshman courses worth taking (e.g below 50 people), if there are even such things at ucsd?

On a side note which freshmen departments/course have the biggest class sizes, which departments have the least?

cheers,

All your writing discussions will be in a small seminar format, with ~20 people. Class sizes can be found on Tritonlink’s class schedule.

As a side note: small classes don’t mean that the TAs/professors are there to coddle you. You’re still in charge of asking for help when you need it. I didn’t necessarily receive more attention in my small classes. If anything, I really liked the large classes because most folks are scared/intimidated/whatever by the professors and never speak up, and I have no shame, so I could get myself recognized.

Most lower div classes have once a week discussions that are typically around 20 people so you’ll be able to get personal interaction with your TA if that’s what you’re looking for.

I think language classes are typically smaller, although I’m not sure about lower div classes. I was able to test into an upper div language classes my freshman year and those classes were pretty small - around 20 so I definitely got one on one interaction with the professor.

I met a few people and got to interact with the professors through freshman seminars. They’re just a unit each, P/NP, and pretty chill. I was interested in learning more about philosophy so I took Free Will and Film. I basically watched a movie every class and we discussed it between 20 people or less after  some people think the seminars are a waste of time, but I thought they were enjoyable. I don’t think I would’ve taken a philosophy class otherwise.
