Small liberal arts schools with good photography programs?

Hi all,
I am looking for small, liberal arts schools with decent photography programs. I’ve never done darkroom before, I’m more focused on digital. I toured Bard and I hated it, which is unfortunate because they have a great photo program. I am also interested in foreign languages, anthropology, etc. Humanities stuff.

Please let me know if you have any ideas - this is something I’m really passionate about. I want to make it part of my college life and possibly my career.

Thanks!

A liberal arts college with a good general art department will usually offer over a half dozen courses in each of these three areas:

  1. Painting and Printmaking

  2. Sculpture and Design

  3. Photography and Video

By looking only at colleges with distinct photography programs (which you didn’t exactly say you are doing), you may be unnecessarily limiting your options; a college with simply a good studio art department may offer enough courses to help you develop your interests.

The above said, Purchase College is one school with a dedicated photography program that is worth a look.

Have you looked at Bennington? My son’s best friend went there, and his two passions were music and photography.

In post #1, I had intended: “2) Ceramics and Sculpture.”

What did you hate about Bard?

Friend’s D is a professional photographer–she studied at the University of Delaware.

Marvin, I didn’t like the atmosphere and felt like I wouldn’t fit in with the student body. They also didn’t present anything that made them different from other schools, besides a few things that I didn’t actually like. The photo program was the only thing I really liked about it.

@bostongirl77 - this is pretty vague. If you can be more specific, it will be easier for people to recommend schools that don’t share certain qualities of Bard.

Hey there! I’m actually a sophomore at a Marist College, and it seems like it could be a great fit for you! I see that you’ve visited Bard- Marist is in Poughkeepsie, NY which isn’t too far away. I’m currently a double major here, with one of my majors being in Digital Media. Digital Media is, in my opinion, one of the best majors on campus. Getting a Digital Media degree is special because it covers SO much. You’ll learn a little bit of everything- from digital & basic photography, to animation, to graphic design, and much more. There’s also a huge chunk of the degree dedicated to your own personal focus, which in your case would be photography. We also have a photography minor available, which many Digital Media majors decide to add to their degree. I highly, highly recommend checking out Marist. Here’s the Digital Media website if you’re looking for some more info. http://www.marist.edu/commarts/art/digitalmajor.html
