Small Private Liberal Arts Colleges vs. Big Universities

Throughout my college search, the biggest issue I’ve faced is that of which is better for an acting education: a close-knit, small community or a larger one where it’s more separated. I’ve especially faced this problem because I’m mainly searching for a BA education so there isn’t really that small 8-10 member BFA group in most of the colleges that I’m looking at, but even some BFA programs such as the one at NYU are a lot larger. I understand that it all comes down to preference, but I mainly wanted to hear from this community whether or not they think a BA program with around 100-200 kids in a large university is efficient.

To let you guys in on a little bit of my thought process and personal experience, I love the idea of a small liberal arts college when it comes to theatre because there’s usually a lot more one-on-one attention, kids can get to know teachers better, and there’s usually a small but loyal alumni network. However, I’ve spent a lot of my life in small private schools and although I understand that a private college experience will be different from a private high school experience, I’ve just never really liked small campus settings because I’m someone who likes change and meeting new people, and I feel that I’d get tired of a small campus really quickly. These small colleges also tend to be in small towns, and although there’s usually a large city around an hour or so away, I hate the trapped feeling I get when I visit these campuses. While with a larger university, I’ve felt a lot more comfortable on campus. There’s usually a big, sprawling campus with tons of student activity and things to do. These universities are usually located in or near a large city so there are plenty of outside opportunities for networking, internships, and just having stuff to do and explore. But I’ve read a lot of complaints about large universities when it comes to theatre BA programs such as there isn’t enough individualized attention, some kids begin to feel lost in their major, and the environment can begin to feel more cutthroat than supportive. I feel like there hasn’t been a clear answer as to what setting is best for me throughout my search because I like the idea of a big school with a large campus, but I also like the idea of a small theatre community with a safe environment where I could feel comfortable with failing and trying new things. I just feel like what I want in a school and what I want specifically in my major are clashing and it’s been hard to find a perfect, clear mix of what I want in a school :-? Any and all advice/experience is welcome!

My daughter attends a small LAC for theatre and has found that being a big fish in a small pond to be very rewarding. She has fostered an amazing relationship with her professors and has even been over to their houses. The contacts she is making in the professional world have been invaluable. She is getting top notch training and her internship over winter break with equity actors phenomenal. I would be happy to PM you with anymore info you may like. My daughter’s college is a very short ride from NYC and she goes into the city all the time. She even auditions for shows in the city when she has time. She has the best of both worlds, a small intimate campus and the ability to go into one of the most exciting cities in the world whenever she wants.

I’m not really clear what you are looking for - what do you mean by “efficient?”

Also, can you provide a bit more background so we can perhaps respond more meaningfully? I’m guessing you are not a senior, given your question as well as your post date. (If you are, then you are facing a much smaller list of options since many schools’ application deadlines have passed.)

Do you know approximately where in the US you would consider attending and what specific big cities you might want to be near?

Are you saying you are also open to a university with a great campus life even if it is NOT near a big city with thriving theater?

(Perhaps Wake Forest University in North Carolina, 4800 undergrads.)

Or, would you maybe enjoy a small NJ state university in a pretty NYC suburb from which you can see the NYC skyline, like Montclair State University - https://www.montclair.edu/arts/theatre-and-dance/academic-programs/undergraduate/ba-theatre-studies/

Am I right in thinking you would prefer a defined campus to urban schools (for instance Marymount Manhattan has a strong BA Theater program, but it is very urban, and consists of 5 buildings in total on the upper east side of Manhattan.)

What are your rough stats so far (current GPA, any test results), so possibly appropriate schools can be suggested.

My daughter wants to act (she actually can’t imagine any other life, but I digress!). She is applying to many BFA Acting programs, but her top choice school was Northwestern, which is a non-auditioned BA Theater program, and she applied ED (and sadly, was rejected.) It was tops for her for many reasons besides the fantastic reputation of their theater program, including the proximity to Chicago and all the amazing theater and culture there, a great college town (Evanston), beautiful campus - not too big/not too small, enthusiastic “big 10 school” and yet a relatively intimate theater community. (She also lived on campus for 5 weeks in the Cherubs Theater program and fell hard for the school although Cherubs in NHSI and not affiliated with NU.)

I’d love to try to help you, but need to know more about your preferences, must-haves and maybe some rough idea of your stats.
