Oh my god! Your son is at Murrow! I’m a senior at Murrow too! Haha.

Well, I guess I can confess that my daughter goes to Brooklyn Tech. Small world! All these Brooklynites!

Brooklyn is a great place to be! Thanks to you both!

I have one student at Plattsburgh, senior physics major/math minor, and one at SUNY Potsdam, music ed major. Both schools are able to provide individual attention but I’d lean towards Plattsburgh for a non-music major. Plattsburgh has one on one tutoring available for students through their learning center vs. group tutoring at Potsdam. The city of Plattsburgh has more to offer in terms of shopping, dining, and lodging plus the student association runs a free shuttle around the town so you don’t need a car. You are only about an hour from Montreal if you need a big city fix. I’ve been very impressed with the caring and concern the faculty at Plattsburgh have shown to my son. He blossomed from a B+ high school student while at Plattsburgh to an A student. He has been encouraged to do outside research and tutoring and is now applying to grad schools. Because he was at a small school, he was noticed and the professors have had time to get to know him. Plus with your son’s grades and stats he should be eligible for a guaranteed scholarship from Plattsburgh and as well a freshman scholarship to Potsdam.
Potsdam is also a good school but far more isolated with limited shopping, dining and lodging facilities. On the plus side if you are an outdoor enthusiast, Potsdam’s student assoc. runs ski trips, rents canoes/kayaks, etc. If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask.

Thanks MomofBassist - it’s great to have that comparison between the two schools. I don’t know if you are from the NYC area, if so, how difficult has it been for your son to get down here from Plattsburgh… did either of your students consider Cortlandt, by the way?

Plattsburgh is just off I87 (Adirondack Northway). You’ll find that your student will quickly find friends with cars to run back and forth to NYC from Plattsburgh. Most SUNY schools have a large population of NYC metro area students so finding a ride to the City isn’t usually a problem. Trains, buses and a small airport are also available. (SUNY Potsdam has Bear buses running to the major cities in the state for breaks.) Neither of my kids looked at Cortland so unfortunately I’m not able to give you a comparison. If your student applies to Plattsburgh and is accepted with a scholarship, they have a Scholars weekend in the Spring which gives you a great idea about honors programs, academics, and life on campus which we found very helpful. Older son was accepted to Oneonta but chose Plattsburgh due to a better scholarship offer from Plattsburgh. We’re not from NYC but both kids have many friends from NYC and Long Island at their schools

Thanks again, Momofbassist

I am an Oswego Alumni and I loved going there. My son was just accepted and it’s on the top of his list as well. I received an excellent education and made lifelong friends. You should visit the campus. The campus is right on Lake Ontario and is beautiful and everyone is so friendly there. I have never met anyone who went to Oswego that didn’t love it.

thanks, haas2008. My son did not end up applying to Oswego, but it does sound lovely.
