So it's about time to register for spring classes. However, there is one science class, in which the lab is optional for my major. I really like this subject, but would taking this lab be hurtful to my grade, considering that we actually do get grades in lab that is combined with our lecture grade?

If it’s a 5 hour chem lab, DO NOT TAKE IT.

A lab will help further your understand of the course material and let you actually apply what you’ve learned.

How it will influence you grade is entirely dependent upon you. I tended to get higher grades in my lab courses while some of my friends always did worse.

Labs are surprisingly rewarding, but a huge time commitment. Frankly, I would skip the lab if it’s not necessary for your major.

Take 1 lab and get a feel for it. My first ochem lab was very helpful in preparing me for work in research and kind of familiarizing me to the various lab equipments. On the other hand, my physics lab is hell. It’s not hard, it’s just ridiculously boring.

IMO, labs are helpful in general application. However, they don’t help you that much for preparing for the exams. If you’re just looking for an A, you’re better off spending the 3-4 extra hours memorizing reactions or studying something else.
