SMC enrollment dates to be posted at 12 AM

I got May 11, at 3 pm but i might not be enrolling. idk yet lol

is may 14 kind of late ?

Well I got may 15, but I have over 60 units and probably won’t be coming back after summer. Thank god that math 8 is like the last class to fill up.

OMG May 20th!!!

Ughhhhh does this pretty much mean im screwed and not getting any classes :(

anything i can do about it?

EDIT: i didnt do the orientation yet though, does this mean i’ll get a different time after i do it?

may 11! 10char

@ Collegeworries

CCCs are totally unreasonable on this. My younger son is graduating from HS in May and he was planning to go to a Cosumnes River college and transfer to UC Davis or UC Berkeley as a Physics major. Registration starts May1 for both Summer and Fall semesters and he was assigned an enrollment date and time of May 18 after 5:00, basically the last hour of the last day. He went and talked to a counselor at CRC to day to inquire he was given such a low enrollment priority.

He was told that his formal consultation and orientation had not been scheduled until May 29 because there were so many new students. He was further told that a freshman can not enroll in courses before their consulation and orientation but since that will not be until the registration period is over they will let him enroll in courses before his consultation and orientation but only during the last hour of the last day of the registration period.

He has no hope of getting any classes for both Summer and Fall semesters and since student’s registration priority improves as he or she accumlulates more credits he will have an equally hard time for Spring semester registration. As a Physics major before he can transfer to a UC he needs three semesters of Calculus, three semesters of Physics, one semester of Linear Algebra and one term of Differential Equations and at least one and possibly two semesters of General Chemistry. All these classes and their waitlists close on the first day of registration. I calculate that the earliest he could expect to be able to transfer to UC Davis and UC Berkeley would be Fall 2016.

I think he has real potential to do well in Physics. He took the SAT once in March of his junior year and without preparation achieved at 660 in CR and 720 in Math. As much as I think he would greatly benefit from studying at high ranked progams like Berkeley and Davis I have pretty much reached the decision that he will go to CSU Sacramento where he
has already been accepted and can live with his older brother, who is a Geology major at CSU Sacrameto, and get his degree in five years years and possibly start Graduate School in Physics at U.C. Davis or U.C. Berkeley rather than still be floundering around in the academic dead end that the CCC system is rapidly becoming.

Sorry to hear about your son, Lemaitre1.

smc does have a lot more classes than most CA CC. I know someone who didn’t get into chem 12 (chem level 2) and they still managed to get themselves added to the class. So there’s always hope. And as far as I know, orientation at smc is a simple online thing that takes about 15 minutes. It’s horrible that your son couldn’t attend orientation simply because there are too many students. That makes me glad I attend smc. Don’t call the ccc an academic dead end. It far from that for those of us who are working hard here.

Lemaitre, send your son to a community college that has priority registration for special programs, if he qualifies.

may 10th! anyone on here from smc going to ucsd in fall?

“Don’t call the ccc an academic dead end. It far from that for those of us who are working hard here.”

I think the CCC system would be a great opportunity for kids like my son who did not apply themselves in high school but aptitude tests like the SAT indicate have great potential if given a second chance. I compared his total CR and Math SAT score of 1,380 (CSUs don’t count the writing) with average total CR+Math SAT of accepted students in 2010 to all the UCs and it was higher than everyone of them, including UC Berkeley and UCLA. I really believe he belongs at a UC not a CSU. However if registration priority is determined by how many credits a student has earned and you start out your CCC career with a time where there is no possibility of getting any classes, let alone the ones you need, I do not see how he can escape this endless cycle of always being last to enroll and never getting the courses he needs.

I wanted to send him to a CCC because it was the best to chance for opening the door to a UC and it would be if all students could take all the classes they need to transfer in a timely manner. Unfortunately, that is not the case now and is likely to get worse. At least at a CSU he can earn a BS and apply for a better graduate school.

Old thread, I know.

At SMC, you have priority enrollment if you’re in the Scholars Program, Black/Latino Collegians, EOPS, or a veteran.

Other ways of getting priority enrollment are if you’ve accumulated enough units (i.e., close to graduation) or if you receive financial aid.

As time presses on, my priority enrollment gets earlier and earlier. It’s fantastic.
