Smith Class of 2013!

Hey everyone, who's applying or thinking about it?

I'm increasingly intrigued by Smith because they're the only women's college with engineering. Don't know how I'd feel there, but it's definitely an interesting idea, and (this sounds bad) Smith makes it pretty easy to just drop an application on them. We'll see!

I'm thinking about it! Even though I'm not 100% sure about the whole women's-only thing, I loved Smith when I visited.

I'm definitely applying! I love the all-women thing, and I loved Smith when I visited! It's currently in a tie for my first choice =)

Interesting! I'll be in Massachusetts in two weeks; maybe I should drop by there. My parents would be surprised, but if I never visit I'll never have a chance to fall in love, eh? :)

I am definitely applying, too. Their notable alumni were what intrigued me at first. I visited their website and attended Simply Smith. I fell in love with Smith College; it seems to be a great environment for young women to grow and flourish to their full potential.

Yup, the alumni are fabulous! Let's play a game: our favorite Smith alumna.

The number of Fullbright winners in 2006 impressed me! Haha, I finally learned today what exactly Rhodes, Marshalls, and Fullbright are. I thought they were science awards. xD How very VERY wrong I was, and now I'm inspired to get one someday. :) Although science awards would be sweet too.

Julia Child. We had Julia Child day this past year, and some of the dinners served were all her recipes. It was seriously one of the best meals ever.

That's the propaganda. But for my D, the propaganda was true. And it seems to have been true for quite a few others as well.

Yale? Nah. She got more out of Smith than she would have gotten out of Yale and I know that to a moral certainty. And in the just out of college world, she's playing in a pretty fast league: the folks she works with have undergrad degrees from places like Harvard, Columbia, Swarthmore, etc., plus a few exotic places but nothing "lower" than U/Virginia, which is a damned good school. She fits right in.

It's great to see so much interest! Make sure you come for a tour, that's the best way to settle the "fit" issue. Maybe I'll be your guide....

It's so weird to see a 2013 thread when the 2012ers and I are all still frantically messaging each other and checking our email for housing assignments today!

If anyone has any questions about interviews or anything as the months progress, feel free to shoot me a message since I've just been through/will be going through a lot of it for the first time. :) Otherwise, there are plenty of incredibly helpful experienced voices here as well!

(I did try to search for this)

Would there be any point in visiting Smith in the summer, or is it completely dead? The only time I can squeeze in a visit is the 29th or the 30th of July.

^^My d signed up for the 8/8 open house day but I think she will switch to the Fall Open house to get a better idea of student life.

Should she arrange an interview on-campus for that day? She's a great candidate in all areas but SATs. I don't think she'll submit them at all.

I'm going to Smith tomorrow for an interview, definitely will apply...any advice?

just be yourself. be prepared to talk about your extracurriculars and your passions. when they ask you if you have any questions, ask something, it shows interest.

IreneA, I can't tell you how weird it is to be reading 2013 threads. I wonder if I'll be reading 2020 threads or if I will have gafiated by then.

For the interview, try to practice a couple of answers in your head before you arrive. They'll definitely ask you what activities you do, what interests you in Smith, why you think you'd be a good fit, and what your passions are or your plans for the future. If you think about this in advance, you'll come off as more articulate.

Try to avoid saying "um" and "like" too much.

And be yourself! Show them what makes you shine.

Cute Smith stories: My daughter will be a first-year in the fall. Recently while driving through our small, midwestern town we noticed the car in the lane next to us had a "Smith College" licence plate holder or sticker, and the state license plate itself read "SMITHIE". No mistaking her school pride! I rolled down my window, she rolled down hers, and my daughter proceeded to tell her she was heading to Smith in the fall. Well, that's all she had to hear! She invited my daughter over to her home to chat, answer any questions or lend advice.

Another day my husband was mowing the lawn wearing his "Smith Dad" t-shirt when a neighbor came dashing over, eager to know, "Who is going to Smith?" Her sister is a proud, involved alum and KNEW she would have to talk to my daughter. They met, and chatted for a few hours! I had heard Smith had a unparalleled alumnae network -- now I believe it!

Just another plug for what promises to be a rare and wonderful collegiate experience!!

Smith is a wonderful place!

Here's our Smith visit report in case it's useful for those making a visit:

I am also thinking of applying here! I won't get a chance to visit at all, because I am based in Peru.
