We just got a mailing "encouraging" our student to "participate in a popular tradition, the Smith College New Student Record."

Can anyone provide feedback on this?

It's described as a "family keepsake and source of keeping in touch with your student's new life on campus," but it seems to me to be of limited use since the questionnaire asks so few questions of the student. It claims to contain "photos and biographical information on fellow incoming classmates," but, again, it asks so few questions that I do not know how valuable it will be or where this "biographical" info is coming from.

Thanks!

I received one of these forms as well. This type of publication exists at a number of LAC’s
as a sort of “facebook” for new students to recognize their first year classmates, where those students are from, the student’s projected college major and a few areas of student interest. I do not know how long this type of publication has been used at Smith College but the form infers that it has been utlized for a significant period of time.

I don’t know how many of my fellow classmates did this, but I decided to skip it. In the era of facebook it’s a bit outdated.

Oh, that. I say skip it. I don’t know anyone in my class who bought it, contributed to it, or thought it would be useful. It seems like just a pointless revenue generator for some publishing company.

Also, the brochure I got last year for it was riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, so that made it seem a bit sketchy.

Ditto to what’s been said. Personally, it just seemed like a cheap gimmick, as phanatic said.
