Can large packages be mailed from the college post office? My husband was going to fly to Northampton and help our daughter move home the week of May 8th. (She has an Amherst class to finish up that Monday.) She has a lot of clothes, books... too much to get home in 2 suitcases. The plan was to get tubs and store what she could, although she'll be gone on a JYA next year, so she doesn't want to store some things for an entire year. They were going to mail the rest that didn't fit in 4 (2 each) suitcases. Today my husband tore a tendon in his arm, so I may have to go instead. I have a 'driving phobia' in unfamiliar places, so I'd like to avoid renting a car if possible. My question is - can we mail boxes from the Smith post office? What other options are there? Would UPS pick up from the dorm? Thanks!

My D has two on campus jobs, and one of them is in the campus post office :)

It is a full service branch of the USPS.

That’s great! Thanks.

UPS will be making a stop on campus during move out time. They’ll be selling boxes, packing tape and other supplies, but they will also be accepting packages for shipping home. You have to bring your things to the location (it’s usually near Cutter/Z on central campus, or at least it was a few years ago). There will be a lot of posters about it around campus, so she should just look for them.

Thanks. I’ll have her look for information.

Just be aware that if your D is packing up before you arrive, her definition of “almost done” and yours may differ. (Thinking of when the packing, taping, etc., was done with less than an hour to spare at graduation when D had a very hard deadline…she was leaving with the orchestra for a post-graduation tour of Sicily. Or a couple of years earlier when in terms of moving out, “almost done” meant that her room looked like the aftermath of the battle of Marengo when we walked in. YMMV.)

I always packed up on my own, usually the night before I was to depart on the plane. It’s a good thing my parents weren’t there, because I could not have dealt with their censure if they had been hovering over me mid-pack. Usually around 2 or 3 in the morning, my room looked like the explosion site of a small bomb and I was already kind of stressed. I just got everything into the trunk room or the free box and took just what I needed for the summer home in my suitcases.

Heh.

We didn’t have the luxury of hovering. We obtained directed tasks. I think my D would have used the word “yapping” instead of “censure.”

Years later, it’s all good. But her skills for planning that embrace the unanticipated have gotten much much much better.
