My friend got an extra sample writing request from Smith that asked her to write a 150-word essay basically on "how is women college relevant in 2009".
Is it a good sign or a bad omen? Anyone here has got the same request?

Hmm, interesting, I've never heard of them asking for an extra writing sample, so I have no idea if it's good or bad.

Is she by any chance an international student with a low-ish TOEFL score? Maybe they're trying to gauge her writing skills to see if she really doesn't write well in English or if she just had a bad test day? This is just my speculation, I have no idea whether or not that's the reason.

Yeah she is an international student..but I remember she scored above 100/120 with around 28/30 (or 27/30) on the writing section. She also did pretty well on SAT writing that she got 670 (essay 11 or 12? I don't remember).

Okay, well maybe it's not that then, it was just the only hypothesis I could think of. I haven't talked over the admissions process with my international student friends so I don't know if this is standard procedure or not, sorry! In lieu of other info, I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

Huh... I'm glad I didn't get that request, because I honestly wouldn't have anything to say. Good luck with it.

i got the request...
