Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program (SSEP) 2011 !!!!!

Hi all! I was too excited to wait until this summer soo.....

who's going to SSEP this summer???
I got in a while ago, but still haven't gotten the info packet, so my excitement currently has no outlet, and I was hoping to find one!
So post here if you're going or have gone! Tell me the goods!! :)

You scared the hell out of me!
I forgot there were two admission deadlines, so I thought you meant the deadline already passed.
I plan to apply within the next two weeks - do you think they’ll let me know right after the receive it, or after the second May 1st deadline? That’s quite a while away. . .

Also, how competitive is it?
I’m planning on applying for financial aid; I hope not applying early won’t ruin my chances for it.

haha sorry!! I forgot too, I just applied when I finished writing the essay :stuck_out_tongue:
I applied for aid too, but I think it’s all based on need (Smith has a pretty large endowment, so you should be good)
They let me know really fast (like the next week!) But some I hear it takes longer.
Also I’m not sure how competitive it is…Smith is pretty well known, so maybe its program is too? And I think it doesn’t matter whether or not you applied early
Good luck!!!

Wow, the next week?! That’s great to hear!
Hopefully my teacher will be finished with my recommendation form soon.

Also, in your essay, did you mention any second choices, or did you only pick your top one for each of the two-week sessions?
Since I’m applying later than many, I’m not sure if I should write in second choices or not.

Since you haven’t gotten the info packet yet, does that mean you don’t know which courses you were accepted into?

I’m thinking that the info packet will hae the official course request form (the essay was probably just so they ould isualize who wants what). And I didn’t put any second choices, which is also why I think the essay wasn’t the official choice-maker.

Has anyone else heard back yet?? Post here~~ :0

I haven’t heard back back but I submitted my app a few weeks ago…when do they usually reply???

mine came in four-ish weeks i think? but their website says 7-ish weeks, so i think it can vary  Also, it may take longer since your app is in the regular admission pool (as opposed to earlyA)

rejected. bleh but I’ll deal. I didn’t really have much science backround, just 8th grade Summer@Brown science course.

I got in too! What courses are you interested in. I haven’t gotten the packet either, but they said it should come at the end of the month in an email they sent me a few weeks ago.

i’m sorry!! there’s tons of other programs!

@mjosephine001
cool! I haven’t actually taken Biology yet, so there’s less that I can choose from…haha but i’m interested in the astronomy course and i think there was a microbio course that didn’t require bio :)

Nice! Sounds cool. What grade are you in? I think I am interested in biomedical engineering and some neurology course.

I’m a junior now! How about you?
And those courses sound cool!! Ok now I don’t know what to take, ahaha!

I had some issues sending my application in. I don’t think it’ll make the May 1st deadline. Do you think they’ll automatically discard my application, since its most likely going to be late?

***bump!!
it’s almost time!! I only have 1 final left  :)

I went to SSEP last summer, and it was an awesome experience (took robotics and genetics - highly recommend both!). The heat was brutal and the dorms un-airconditioned, but I had a great time. The campus was beautiful. If you have any questions, just ask.

oh cool, thanks! I’m familiar with the summer there…ugh!!
anyway…How interesting/challenging did you find the material? i know it’s mostly lab work but…did you still learn a lot? Thanks! C:

I did learn a lot. I can only speak for the two classes I took, but both were learning experiences in different ways. For genetics, we spent about half our time in lab and half our time in lecture, learning concepts essential for understanding the experiments. I found it quite challenging (although disclaimer, I hadn’t taken biology before I took the class). During lab downtime, we’d do problems relating to the material, and we all collaborated with each other.

Robotics was a different experience entirely, but I enjoyed the independent nature of it. It was certainly an excellent introduction to basic programming and fundamental engineering principles, in addition to HTML. Again, disclaimer: I had no experience with any of the material, but there was a girl in my class who’d done robotics before and I think she also had fun.

I actually learned a ton, and the genetic class especially has given me a much more in-depth understanding than I would’ve gotten just from my biology class this year.

hey, i’m trying to apply for 2012 summer science program in smith college. when i see the application form, they are asking abt essay.
they said that i should write essay about “why you hope to attend the Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program. Which research courses are of interest to you and why?”

here, i wonder what the “research courses” refers to, is it refers to biochemistry, engineering, chemistry, or some courses such as designing intelligent robots, and those.

please help…

@ Choiatom:
When it’s referring to “research courses” it means biochemistry, engineering, and chemistry.
