Smith to Brown

Transfer to Brown, need advice? :)

My daughter is interested in transferring from Smith College to Brown. Her H.S. stats were:

#3 out of 250.

SAT 2170 (V710, M700, W 760).

SAT II scores of Bio (750), Math II 720.

AP Bio (5), AP Amer. Hist. (4).

She is the Rensselaer Medal Winner from her school (best science student), and also the Harvard Book Award winner; both won in her junior year.

National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist, and finalist.

As a Senior took three more AP courses (English, Stats, Calculus AB)

GPA is a 4.1.

Her GPA at Smith is currently a 4.0 after first semester, and her courses right now are Org. Chem., Cell Bio., Intro to Neuroscience, Portuguese, and Ballet. Transfer would be next fall, 2007.

She wishes to major in Neuroscience. Please advise as to chances? Thanks a bunch!

BUMP Anyone??

No one on a message forum can tell you what your chances are with any accuracy. Brown has been inconsistent in the number of transfers accepted. It used to be pretty transfer friendly, but last year few were accepted. Obviously your daughter's stats are excellent or she wouldn't be at Smith. She has as good a chance as anyone. She'll need to write a good essay about why she wants to transfer. If she is unhappy with Smith, she should find some safety and match schools for transfer as well as Brown, which is a reach for anyone.

Agree with MomofWildChild, if she is looking for coed schools, near Smith in academic quality, consider Tufts or Brandeis as back up choices.OR Barnard --which shares Columbia facilities and courses.

MomOWC...thanks so much for your honest response. I appreciate it very much. I realize that no one can respond with any accuracy, and I'm not looking for a definite yes or no...just asking for an honest opinion from some folks who may have much more experience than I. Pyewacket...it appears that Brown is the only school she is interested in other than where she is. I appreciate your feedback as well. If Brown does not work out, she will remain where she is.

yeah, Brown has been very inconsistent in terms of transfer admission rates recently. Her chance depends largely on what this rate will be for '07. We're talking about ranges from as high as ~30% two years ago to a rumored low of ~5% last year (I don't think official figures were released- possibly because of the backlash against the sudden drop).

Consider my quick forecast if you want (I know- but I enjoyed doing it)http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=3018716

If I had alot of time and very detailed data and nothing to do Id like to make a very detailed time-series foreacast and see the results:)
