Smith Transfers Fall 2013

Well!
I think that Smith gets a lot of first-year and transfer applicants that are interested in learning Japanese, よろしく!
I’ve been studying it independently myself for years, but I haven’t gotten very far on my own haha.

The Japanese teacher at Mount Holyoke, Konoeda, is GREAT though. I was able to sit in on a class of hers and it was so delightful and engaging. It was a lot of fun to watch her interact so smoothly with her students!

I love foreign languages myself. As I’m interested in education, I’d like to go to the biggest east Asian countries and learn more about their education systems in comparison to ours here in the states!

I understand though, it’s so difficult to figure out what school is best for you unless you take on the independent initiative, which you have! So I really am hoping for the best for you.

Oh! Were you at the transfer students visit day this past February at Moho? I was there and also got to sit in on some wonderful classes!

You have really big dreams and I’m very impressed! I hope Smith can provide that for you, too, as it’s such a great school! Here’s to hoping the best for you, too.

Am I the only one who is constantly refreshing my e-mail and running out to my mailbox every day just to see if a decision letter might somehow miraculously be in there this early? Haha.

Pinkblossoms19: I was wondering about sending a supplemental letter to Smith. Unfortunately, I wasn’t seeing a professional during my first years at college but I was during high school. Should I contact her about the possibility of sending a clearance to Smith? I’m also going to start seeing a therapist this Monday so maybe he’ll be able to vouch for me when the time comes? Thank you so much. I wish you the best of luck as well! Let’s goooo, future Smithies.

Eelizabeth: Oh, goodness. I don’t remember a thing, haha. If hiragana is not practiced often, one completely forgets. I’m glad I’m not alone. It’s really difficult to explain how a personality disorder can take over every facet of someone’s life. Earlier today, one of my college counselors looked at my transcripts with exasperation. Yay!
I was specifically wondering about the CommonApp. I didn’t technically take a gap year as I’ve always been enrolled in college but I definitely changed secondary schools. Oh, okay! That’s the supplementary letter I can send!

PROMPTS. The first personal statement seems somewhat short. How long was yours? What did you write it on? In that prompt, I’ll explain how Smith is the best college for me?

It’s been a week and I still haven’t sent that e-mail. I don’t know why I’m so afraid. I guess I should explain my situation and then ask them what they’d expect from a transfer like myself? One of the most important questions I would have is whether they would accept academic renewal and academic renewal by course repetition. That would be a huge deciding factor in my case.

I anxiously await March 22nd and I’m rooting for both of you!

Hey everyone! I also applied for Fall of 2013. Does anyone know when we hear about decisions?

Take your time in sending the e-mail, too. Just do it when it feels right!

I actually called today and they said they’re sending the letters next week for those of us who applied by the preferred deadline! Great news :)

Application Update: It’s been a couple of rough weeks but Smith finally received in all my materials. (Yay!)
Based on what I’m reading, I guess I won’t hear back from them until June.
(Virtually sending positive vibes to those who find out next week)
Good luck!

Hi I’m new to the forum. I’m a student at a p big public school in California. I’m desperate to get out. My GPA is a 3.67, but I’ve never gotten anything lower than a B-. Also I sent three letters of rec from professors I’m very close to. In addition, I’m very proud of my essays and EC. I taught an elective as part of my schools experimental college, and I’m secretary of my college’s chapter of College Democrats.

I’m worried about my age. I’m a sophomore now and am hoping to transfer in as a junior. It seems like most people transfer after the first year, which I considered but then changed my mine and now sorely regret. I have no clue if I have any shot of getting in! I can hardly wait for next week.

@Daphums: Yeah I think it wouldn’t hurt to get her to send Smith a clearance. And the same with your therapist too. I believe the more Smith sees that you’re clear to return back to college studies, the better. I know Smith is one of those schools that take mental health seriously, so sending something stating your improvements (in my opinion) will probably only help in your application. Best of luck to you too!

@Eelizabth: Oh! I got there just as we were about to split with our hosts so I didn’t pay attention to many of the people there, since I was frantically searching for my host haha. I was the Asian girl with the blonde hair. Not sure if you saw me, but if you did I’m sorry I didn’t say hi!
And I was wondering if we get any notification this week…I know RD girls are hearing this week, not so sure about transfers so lets cross our fingers for it!

And everyone else, I want to say welcome and I hope we all hear back soon! It’s nice to know that I’m not alone on this journey so I understand completely what you are all going through!

Oh! And anon3113, I’m also applying to get in as a junior, so don’t worry. I believe I’m actually older than most of those applying as juniors because I took a gap year after my sophomore year and just applying to return back to college now (I’m 21-22) so I don’t think age matters at all. A transfer is a transfer, and even if you’re above 24, Smith offers this sort of transfer scholar program for adults wishing to return back to college (I think it’s called the Ada Comstock Scholars program). So no worries there! I wish you the best of luck!

I’m so glad I found this thread! I’m applying to transfer as an Ada. Smith is my dream school and totally my first choice. I’m super nervous to find out if I’m accepted or not next week…

Does anyone know if we find out via Bannerweb, or is it just by mail next week? Thanks!

I know freshman find out with an email and a letter by mail. It looks like we should be able to find out via Bannerweb, but I don’t know for certain.

The Smith FB site said letters for transfers are going out on March 26.

omg, I’m glad the waiting will be over soon.

Hey everyone here’s a helpful grieve resource, you know, just in case

[Rookie » How to Get Rejected From College](Rookie » How to Get Rejected From College)

Haha thanks for that! I’m applying the tips for myself over the weekend. So nervous!

Welcome Ada Comstock friends! I hope that everyone is treating themselves well right now.
I’m so extremely nervous to hear back from Smith College. Last year, the women of College Confidential received phone calls letting them know that they were accepted. I don’t know if Smith College will be calling this year (they got a record amount of applicants, I don’t know if that counts transfers as well as first-years), but I am so nervous because my phone is broken and therefore I wouldn’t be able to receive the call either way!

Good luck everyone, stay strong!

Thanks! I’m super nervous and trying to stay positive. I hope we all make it

I really hope so, too! We all deserve this.

Does anyone know if the decisions will be on bannerweb tomorrow and if so, what time?

I honestly don’t know… in the 2011 transfer thread, admissions wasn’t putting the transfer decisions on Bannerweb.
