HPU is like OZ and Nido ( the 3rd highest paid College President in the US!) is the wizard behind the curtain.
Wellness dorms ( no drinking and quiet ) is a joke. Parties until 3am before midterms and a finals. Plenty of underage drinking and pot.
Adjunct profs and 'success coaches" are a joke.
Faculty afraid to tell King Nido he has no clothes on.
President’s Seminar an indoctrination into how to become wealthy and how to blame poor people for being poor.
Party buses, organized by tutors, take kids to Greensboro to party during the week.
If your student drives a Tesla, BMW or Mercedes- this is the place for them
Can you explain where this harsh assessment comes from? We just returned from the presidential scholar’s weekend at HPU and my son is still seriously considering enrolling there. I would appreciate advice but your comments make it sound like you just have a beef with Qubein. Are you a current parent, student, or employee?
I don’t have any ax to grind here, our D looked at HPU a couple years ago and decided not to apply, but we live in NC and I have been rather interested by what is going on over at HPU. To me the big issue isn’t about partying, drugs etc., which may or may not be true, but more the academic side which after all is why we spend all that money to send our kids to college!. Yes HPU has spent a lot on the campus amenities, but they have not upgraded basics like the library and science labs, and the admissions are getting less selective, more than 80% of applicants are being accepted. It seems as if they have have run up a very large debt on these campus improvements, so now they mainly try to get well-off students who don’t need financial aid. If you look at other websites of student reviews and Glassdoor, you get the impression they pressure the faculty to go easy on grading because they want to keep the parents happy so they’ll keep paying. Even so 1 in 4 freshmen don’t come back for sophomore year, which is very high for a private college.
we also looked at HPU 2 years ago and were originally impressed with the nice facilities. When we went back for the acceptance weekend, I talked to a good amount of current students. The area around HPU is still coming out of the woods after the mass exodus of the furniture industry. Not much to do but get on the Greensboro shuttle on the weekends. There have been articles with Dr. Q has taken out a number of loans with NCNB and is indeed relying on the full price students to stay afloat. We were also concerned with the high transfer rate of freshman to sophomore year. My son ended up at an SEC school and never looked back.
I am a local parent who has spent more than the average amount of time on campus , listening and observing. I do not have a personal issue with him, have never had anything but a cursory conversation with him. My comments re him are a result of his leadership- he is, after all, the Pied Piper and has set the tone and culture for the University.
