Husband has masks with him.
My nephew is supposed to be honeymooning in the Poconos shortly. They probably won’t mind staying indoors .
My kids are in NYC, and one said it was so bad earlier today that his company was giving out masks that they could wear indoors. Supposedly better now.
Out west, we’re used to dealing with the effects of wildfire smoke (including days where it rained ash) but I’ve never seen AQI numbers that high! Keep your windows closed, run your house fan or AC, and wear a KN95 mask if you must go out. Hopefully, rain or wind will move the smoke along. Stay safe, everyone!
It looks like some dystopian movie
S lives in nyc. He and fiancée have 2 air cleaners running in their condo, plus central air and sealed windows in their building.
Shakespeare in the park, Yankee game cancelled, NYC schools again cancelled all outdoor activities tomorrow. It looks better outside but the particulate levels are higher. They are now saying 72 more hours of this, hope this is a sign of a long summer since the fires in Canada do not seem close to under control.
I’m on Cape Cod. It been 50-100 here. Glad we aren’t in NYC. (200-300 it looks like.) At my husband’s med school they sent people home early and told them to wear masks.
Still nothing like Xian where where the first thing our tour guide did was hand us a mask and show us that the air quality was 450!
Nyc mayor reported air index of 484 !
I am guessing he is likely to ask for some federal money for this natural disaster at this point.
I remember the PPM index being over 400 at my house when things were bad a few years ago here on the west coast.
Kid is going to stay in the small studio with the cat they are cat sitting so as to avoid the longish walk back and forth. Wearing two KN95’s. Work is cancelled for the week. The psychological effect is dystopian.
NYC mayor does not make up or cherry pick the numbers. They are what they are, just like air temperature. We also had readings over 400 in our neck of the woods a few summers ago. It is not sufficient to declare a disaster and call for federal help.
The mountain is not out, so it looks like we are getting some particulate from the BC fires.
Our air quality was 372 earlier. Horrendous.
A simple Winix air purifier made a HUGE difference for us. We now have several. I expect the fires to be an annual event for a while, so we stocked up on replacement filters and added a couple of units.
You also can make a quite inexpensive air purifier out of a box fan and a furnace filter!
Here is how:

My phone says 273 at 1 a.m. in Brooklyn.
