SMU Class of 2017 EA/RD Discussion Thread

So I got a founders’ scholarship (3.0, 35 ACT, Eagle Scout, Class President, Cross Country Captain, and 6 or 7 other ECs), does anyone know what my chances are for BBA Scholar?

what is the founders scholarship worth?

The Founder’s Scholarship is $15,000 a year.

Thank you and I forgot to say Congrats to “stocksandblondes”!!!

I am rejected.

GPA: 3.4
ACT: 24
Ranking: 23/256
Out of state

(Someone in here said that he/she have a 3.1 GPA and 24 ACT and accepted, so I am a little surprised that I am rejected)

I will try again next year.

Still no notification in MA.

nothing yet. I am in la.

JustinLA:Keep your chin up! If you did your best with what you have, that’s all you can do! Maybe study for the ACT more and take again to bring up the number, or try the SAT. Many people do better on one or the other. You scores aren’t that bad just not what SMU might want right now.(Maybe that other kid had some extra hidden talents). Try another decent school for a year, get good grades and maybe try to transfer if you still want to at that time! Good luck to you! A year can make a big difference…:)

Big red package for DS literally wouldn’t fit in the mailbox. Carrier left it on the door step. Central VA.

Letter came today in IN, I got accepted and was named a Second Century Scholar (20k/year).

SAT: 2290 (comp 1510)
ACT: 35
GPA: 4.57 (weighted)
Rank: 2/163

Not a ton of extracurriculars (quiz bowl, research, NHS, student gov) so I was pleasantly surprised at the scholarship offering.

Accepted.
Texas
21/629
ACT: 29
Lots of EC.
11k a year, renewable, scholarship.
Still way to expensive though.

JustinLA: if its not the right place for you it’s a blessing to figure it out now. What are you wanting to major in? Where else have you applied?

Arttillygirl:
This is the only school I applied that is out of state. All other schools I applied are in Louisiana. They are
Tulane University
Loyola University
Xavier University
LSU
and some schools in the University of Louisiana System

I applied to SMU because they seem similar to Tulane. I would like to major in Business Administration, and SMU would be a wonderful fit for me.

Bandmom123:
Thx!

Well several of those schools have excellent programs. You could always go to LsU, get good grades and save $ and do your graduate degree at smu.

Arttillygirl:
It is a good idea! One good thing about being a Louisiana citizen and going to a Louisiana public colleges, and I am not showing off, is that my tuition (only) is free as long as I have a 20? on my act and a 2.5? GPA (but Louisiana generally has a horrible education, as far as I know). My parent said that she would pay my tuition, but if I go to LSU, she would have to only pay my housing and books.

The two schools that I actually want to go are Loyola and LSU. They are very similar in some aspects, but their student life is very distinct. So, I still have no idea which one to go to for my undergrad.

Hi ImThinking-
We are from the NW also and nothing yet. My husband says this delay can’t be good news. I see from reading the thread that someone had called SMU and that all of letters went out at the same time… so did you get notification yet? I’m getting very nervous!!
kindofworried…

PS - good luck to you ImThinking! You sound so passionate about SMU- I hope it works out in your favor!

With all due respect to SMU and any other school that does mail-only, wake up and get with today’s mediums of communication. It is not right that everyone does not know their status at the same time. You have some kids who got their news last Saturday and others still in the dark. Use an online notification system, please.

Any tips for me? I have yet to apply and have started working on the supplements.

I got a letter yesterday - DEFERRED! Better than rejected, I must say. My heart sank when I saw the little envelope, and I cried for maybe an hour. And then I saw the light! this gives me an opportunity to send them information that I wouldn’t have otherwise. Also, the admissions decision was probably made before the music decision, so I had most likely been deferred even before the music school notified admissions about my acceptance. I had a rough junior year, and I acknowledged that in my application. I have all As in 5 out of my 6 classes, including APs, and I have one B in Physics, which hopefully doesn’t hurt my chances – these grades are definitely an improvement from my junior year, which was uncharacteristically bad for me. This is why a deferral makes sense. I also received a national honor in music, which is great. The only thing I regret is that I didn’t take the SAT a third time. My parents thought my first score was fine, but I know that if I worked harder, I could have done better. It is unfortunate for me that they don’t look at writing because I got over 700 in that section. Oh well. I’m talking with my admissions counselor, and getting all my new info sent. Based on threads and articles I’ve seen, a deferral isn’t the end of the world for EA, and especially not for SMU. I’m staying optimistic. I’m applying to 12 schools, but the more I think about it, SMU is really my first choice. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and options open!

Sorry for typing so much. I needed to vent. I considered making a deferral thread, and maybe I will if more people mention deferrals.

Congratulations to all that got a big red envelope in the mail! I still have hope that I might get one in February or March!
