That is encouraging to hear about merit possibilities in ED.
Yes those average Cox BBA Scholars scores have become extremely competitive. Crazy! We attended a tour, info session, and business breakout seminar last summer. SMU was very honest about what it takes to obtain admission to Cox. It is such an amazing school.
My S23 is working hard this junior year. It is a difficult time to be an applicant in the college admission process.
Good luck to your son during this time and congrats on his admissions thus far!
Considering Hunt candidates were just released to the readers, it could still be a few weeks. Said differently, as a Hunt alumnus, I sometimes read applications for the scholarship. The batched applications were just released to the readers this week. The have some time to read those applications and sort the applications before final decisions are made for invitations. Some students may be considered for multiple scholarships. As always, be patient.
Same thing happen with DS. Both me and my wife are alums and he has wanted to go to SMU since he was in elementary school. He has been accepted into every other school except for his reach (waiting since he did RD there) and now he has to make a decision on whether to take merit scholarships somewhere else or go to his dream school at full tuition.
I was very surprised that he didnāt get anything at all given that all the other private schools he applied to gave him some merit scholarships.
Completely understand your frustration. DS was extremely disappointed not only that he wasnāt considered for Merit scholarships with his grades and resume, but also that the admissions counselor was pretty non-empathetic. For a school that has so much $$ flowing through it, asking anyone to pay full price is absurd. Especially with all the advertisement and stats about how SMU makes their tuition affordable with merit and financial aid. Even a small scholarship would make the student feel like the school is actually interested in having you as part of their student body vs just wanting your money.
Thankfully DS found out he was accepted into UT Austin this week which is his top choice. Heāll most likely go there and get an excellent education at a fraction of price.
Thanks! I totally agree with everything you are saying, I had zero expectations of anything significant, but another comparable school (one SMU lists as in their peer group) gave him a merit award that covers 50% tuition. He has also been accepted to another higher ranked state school that even at full out of state tuition is less than SMU. Ultimately, we will be taking more college trips this spring to get sense of where he will belong the best.
Congrats on your DSās acceptance to UT Austin. We were there in the fall, Austin is a great place to live.
May I ask you if they read applications first for The Hunt and then watch the selected applicants videos or how does that typically work. Would there be any indication as to how many views on YouTube he has gotten to be an indication of any chance at the Hunt? Sorry for all of the questions, he is very eager to hear about this scholarship, not for the tuition break ( which is super nice) but mostly for the core group of people he would have the opportunity to get to know before school even starts, these kind of kids are āHis Peopleā. Thank you so much for any advice or help, we appreciate it.
So my son just received the denial email for Hunt. Super disappointing over here. Just curious if you would share your students stats just to get a grasp on what they were looking for. Congrats to you super competitive so that is an accomplishment in itself to get an invite.
