We have visited colleges all across the US and my son really likes SMU. He is a NMS with 4.4/4.0 GPA, 34 ACT and 1530 SAT (will take both again as a senior), so he expects to earn some merit aid. He really is math oriented and wants to combine engineering and business. This interest has led him towards Industrial Engineering. His concern with SMU Lyle is that they do not offer a ABET accredited Industrial Engineering program, but they do offer Management Science. The degree in Management Science sounds so vague. Are SMU Management Science grads competitive in the job market against other with ABET accredited Industrial Engineering degrees?
You could look at the course offerings of the two programs. Pick an IE program from a couple different types of schools to get the flavor of it.
Also you might contact the university and ask about 6month employment rates and average starting salaries … and compare those two a couple IE programs.
I’ve always liked studying IE. Just don’t think I’d have enjoyed it as a career. Good luck!
@GaelRacer My roommate is doing the management science program or (EMIS). It is essentially an industrial engineering program. He interned for an electrical engineering firm last summer and this summer worked for a financial lender near his home. Many of my friends been able to do whatever they want with it. Many have worked for airlines and generally do operations or supply chain work. They also gain tons of experience in database work, coding, and Excel. Hope that is a good rundown of the program its very popular with my friends. Also the amount of mathwork they complete being in the engineering school my roommate only needs 2 or 3 extra courses to get a second major in math.
