hello,
I am deciding between going to SMU or university of houston but i can’t seem to choose. I’m majoring in business–either finance or management but im also doing pre-me. I am an African American female who’s somewhat shy. Diversity is a huge thing for me but I also would like a job lol. I like the prestige SMU offers but it comes at a price of being surrounded with people that don’t look like me or have similar experiences. it is also very expensive but the connections and the name of SMU has weight which is why im considering it so much. I like Houston because it is large and affordable, however it doesn’t really have the connections or name that SMU has. Since med school is the goal, i know that doesn’t matter but I’m really conflicted.
This one is a easy one for me. UofH is the most diverse university in Texas while SMU offers little in the way of diversity. UofH is also much cheaper than SMU which means alot if your going to med school. Your MCAT score will be more important than were you got your undergrad degree. Save the money and put it towards MED school.
The University of Houston seems to be the better option for you socially, financially & academically.
Agreed with the others. If the goal was to stay in business and pursue something in Finance, I would lean toward SMU. For Med School though, UH in a heartbeat.
one of my friends who went to school with me goes to u of h alot of african americans that i knew went there not so much smu even though they have a center for african americans smu isnt know for diversity @sarionmos its known for other things like its academics heres from their page https://www.smu.edu/Admission/CampusLife/Diversity-at-SMU
Visit both campuses if you can. Get a tour, hang out in the common areas and see if you can talk with pre-med advisors and UH Honors College. My UH roommate went to Michigan Med School and is now an ER doctor. I mentor SMU business students and the Hilltop is great too.
