SMU Priority Wait list and January 2010

Received letter from SMU saying I could accept a place on their priority wait list and a guaranteed spot for January 2010. Anyone else see anything like this? Does anyone know if they do this every year or if this is something new?

SMU in Dallas,TX? Its an easy school to get into…

An insenstive and not very helpful reply by the previous post. You shouldn’t assume everyone using this site is looking at the top tier schools you may be looking at. SMU is a great school and tough to get into for lots of students.

Thanks Gidgetmom for your support. I’ve been around kids like iambored10 many times in my town and their lack of awareness of life always comes back to bite them in their butt. Let him/her have false feelings of superiority now - at some point something outside his control will happen and he will wonder why no one wants to give him support! So predictable!

I’ve always wanted to live in Dallas due to family situations so SMU was a great choice for me. I got my acceptance letter right after this first posting - with great financial aid I might add!

Congratulations Eledia! SMU was my son’s first choice. He will be attending in August.

Out of interest, I looked at some of iambored10’s posts. It appears he is attending UT/Austin (which has 50% acceptance rate). This is somewhat coincidental because when my son started his college search, UT Austin was his first choice. He went to visit it and realized he did not want to attend a school with over 37,000 undergraduates.

Luckily, his guidance counselor suggested he look at SMU on the way back. Once he saw it, it became his number one choice.

People like iambored10, like to think they are superior to others. They are not.

At the end of the day, your SMU degree will take you as far as you want to go.

Go Mustangs!

Congratulations Eledia! And I agree with your thoughts on the iambored posting. Makes me wonder how the schools of his choice would feel about his/her general attitude.

My daughter was accepted to SMU in January which was her first choice all of fall and was a long shot for her. (she was deferred from early action) She was accepted at CU Boulder around the same time and after going back to visit both schools chose Boulder. I really wanted her to pick SMU and have such mixed emotions but am trusting she knows where she will fit in best. SMU continues to send literature in the mail almost daily. I love how personal the school is and won’t completely give up until we get to May 1st. It was a really tough and tearful decision. Best of luck to all of you!

SMU is coming up academically, just need to look at the SAT and ACT scores. Someone does not know their facts.

This waitlist/Jan admit is becoming more common. My D recd one. My advice is, it depends. Do you have friends going there who you could visit? Could you ask if you could attend freshmen orientation, new student days, and get an SMU email, to help get acclimated? Could you ask to meet with a cousnelor to suggest schools for the Sept term, classes which would transfer, etc.

If you are going to SMU be prepared to go Greek. The school is completely centered around the Greeks and is a somewhat elitist environment.

Lets clear a few things up:

SMU is a tier 1 school. Look at your stats before you speak.

SMU’s acceptance rate is dropping. Fall 2009 was 50%. Easy?
Compared to other universities, SMU is considered more selective.

Freshman rush occurs second semester at SMU, so a student interested in the Greek system is at no disadvantage.
There are great opportunities for internships or travel with that first semester.
