How much snow did College Park receive during the storm?

Don’t know official totals…but D is 6’ tall and the snow on McKeldin mall was up over her knees! She posted some pics of the big snow fight from yesterday…it looked like a lot of fun! (but then again, I’m 7 hours South of there so I can say it looked fun!!)

I think it is about two feet on average here. (One of my friends got a call from her mom this morning – they live in Howard Co. – they got 38 inches in some places there).

They’ve been clearing campus like crazy, but everything else is closed (the government, PG Co. Schools, etc.). They probably won’t announce for a while yet if we have classes on or not, but based on the sheer quantity of paths on campus completely iced over, and the roads off-campus… a lot of people on campus have their fingers crossed to make this a four-day weekend. :)

ALSO, It’s supposed to snow again on Tuesday/Wednesday, maybe another 5 inches? ([Warnings for Prince Georges, Maryland : Weather Underground](<a href=“Local Weather Forecast, News and Conditions | Weather Underground”>Local Weather Forecast, News and Conditions | Weather Underground))

I’m thinking they won’t cancel classes tomorrow…from what I can see from my dorm window, the paths look fairly clear. Although I would’ve said the opposite when I walked to work this morning at 6am, everything was solid ice and a lot of sidewalks weren’t cleared, but I think they brought in a lot more guys with shovels from the surrounding community to clear things off today. can anyone report what the paths are like elsewhere on campus? (I live on north hill)

The paths are clear, plus they have any available staff working 2 12-hour shifts (and have since Friday afternoon). There still was a lot of ice on the way back from Comcast this afternoon, but I think the only issue is whether or not people from off-campus (commuters, staff, professors, etc.) can get on campus. As of noon-ish, the path from the Cambridge community to the diner was just ice. The paths around the ERC / Comcast are still fairly icy as well.

Literally, just as I sent that, I got the notification. Campus is CLOSED tomorrow. Four-day weekend!

Nevermind just got the email that the university is closed tomorrow i will probably regret making a post this exuberant in a few minutes but yayyyyyyy

edit: great minds think alike, fresh42jazz! Have a great Monday!

We also now have a winter storm watch in effect. Potential for 5 or more inches on Tuesday.

I knew there wasn’t gonna be any school. Absolutely none of the parking lots were plowed as of 3 pm. The paths are still pretty treacherous on parts of south campus. Also after the December storm, the campus was closed on Monday.

I’m gonna put my money on no school tomorrow as well. I just walked to work (FYI, I live on north hill and work in the cambridge community). I actually sprained my ankle yesterday walking to work, and it was healing up today, but then I fell enough times to do more damage to it. The two long paths alongside the mall are completely ice, as well as the paths crisscrossing the mall, and a majority of other paths that aren’t in areas that need to be clear (around dorms, leading to dining halls). The only paths they can clear are the ones that are just tamped snow, but a lot are just solid sheets of ice. The roads are fine, but there are just too many footpaths. And what with the snowfall for tomorrow night until Wednesday morning, I would be somewhat comfortable predicting we will have Wednesday off as well.

Also, insider’s tip for people on north campus: just saw a Shur Fine truck pull onto the road that starts at the Centreville parking lot. Incon’s getting restocked!

“And what with the snowfall for tomorrow night until Wednesday morning, I would be somewhat comfortable predicting we will have Wednesday off as well.”

That would mean that, of the 5 latest sessions of my 9am MWF, we’d only have met for one of them. [The professor is already obviously annoyed by the snow…]. That would be interesting. :)

The latest prediction for the Tuesday/Wednesday snow: “Accumulations…potential for 8 or more inches of snow. There is a good likelihood of snow in excess of 10 inches.”

New forecast predicts 10-20 inches of snow.

Closed tomorrow

I’m starting to wonder if we’ll ever have classes again… assuming we do get a lot more snow (even if we just get the minimum amount), we’ll almost definitely have no school tomorrow. [A professor of my sent me an e-mail about the course work we’ll do online if we don’t have class, which included the phrase: “There is about a 100% chance that we won’t have class tomorrow…”]. Then, Thursday is iffy, especially if they can’t get things cleared between what came down Friday/Saturday and what’ll come down today/tomorrow. This has turned into a much longer weekend than expected. :)

haha, I have a feeling Thursday might be off too, at this point I’ve just been making up homework for the chapters we would be doing in class… but hey, I’ve been catching up on all my TV shows :)

We must sound like a broken record: UMD is closed on Thursday.

lol i dont think we can expect to go back to class by monday at this rate, lol. I dont understand why they just dont close friday now!

I saw on the news that DC has broken the snow record set back in 1893, and that Baltimore broke the same record. Wondering UMD is placing all of the snow piles…Byrd stadium maybe

Well guys, tomorrow’s another iffy day…on my scouting expedition an hour or two ago, they were really clearing the paths astonishingly fast, but there’s a lot of melting going on, and apparently it’ll be cold enough tonight for all of it to freeze.

Additionally, the sidewalks along route 1 have barely been touched, I was clambering over ice dams on all fours at a few points. I don’t know if those sidewalks matter when they decide about opening or closing the campus, though.

Any other input? I haven’t explored north campus since this morning, and it was so-so at that point, so recent reports from that side of campus would be greatly appreciated!

North campus was okay, fairly good comparatively to the rest of the week, except there was slush and water everywhere, which will freeze tonight… I was at the ERC/Diner about an hour ago, and the only paths that you can’t walk at least single-file in cleared areas are by the beach, which is completely snowed/iced over.

I’m not sure how the off-campus roads are. If campus is closed, I’ll bet it’s due in large part to commuters/professors/staff trying to get on campus.

I guess we’ll all know in an hour or two. If we do have off, that would make it 10 straight days off. Ugh…

Well, it’d be stupid to go back to school just for Friday…

I think they should just cancel it out of principle!
