for anyone whos skied in the west, how are the slopes (icy?) at ithaca, how far are they from campus?

They are about 20 minutes from campus from what I've heard (Greek Peak).

Have you never ridden in the east? I'd imagine its pretty comparable to anywhere else in NE snow-quality wise. The best way to describe it compared to the West (I've ridden Utah, Colorado, and BC) is the snow is thicker and heavier, kind of "wetter", but you'll adjust quickly.

and the mountains arent AS steep. there are still some nice ones. but not that you can go to like right after class and be back before dinner

The mountains aren't necessarily less steep. They're shorter, and don't have slopes as steep as the steepest slopes out west. Some slopes though, like upper national at stowe or the olympic race course at whiteface are very steep.

There is not powder on the ground. Instead there is packed down groomed snow in the morning and skied off snow in the afternoon. The slopes get very icy sometimes. It can also get very cold and windy. The west really is better than the east in terms of conditions, but the east produces better skiers who actually know how to use their edges. Just look at the two biggest names on the olympic team: Miller and Rahlves. Same deal with all the sick snowboarders coming out of the stratton mountain school.

The best part of having greek peak (where you will ski while you are at cornell unless you go to somewhere nice for a weekend) is that it is close to campus, which means you can get a season pass (student price of $129 and no complicated registrar paperwork if you do it through the Cornell Ski and Snowboard Club. The club also runs sick trips to places like Tremblant and Whistler on breaks (even Chamonix, France this year!), and also smaller weekend party trips like the one I'm going on right after rush week at Sugarbush. The post rush trip called ski-fest is so popular it sold out the 80 or so spots literally instantly. The line was full before they even started taking names at 5:30 PM.

You won't mind the east. It's still just as fun to ski with your friends, and some of the parks are sick: Mtn Creek, Stratton, Sunday River, and Okemo. On days when you get 6 or 8" of snow, it's just incredible on the regular slopes, too.

Hey sparticus is there busses that go up to Greek Peak regularly? I'm still kind of deciding whether or not I should bring my car...

Also, when it snows on campus, are there any good rails and such that people hit up?

every saturday, for free, if you join ski club, but if you want to go after class having a car is awesome. Having a season pass means you can ski for just a couple hours and not worry about the cost.

yeyahhhh snowboarding!! i'm from AK, so i'll show you guys what's up. JK.

you all have some sick back country there.

Wow it's a small world afterall...I just got back from the Tantulus Lodge in Whistler last week and now Cornell's Ski and Snowboard club is staying there :o.

I just got back from Deer Valley. :D the west is incredible

never gone snowboarding and skiing before. Hope to learn at Cornell :D

you can take it as a gym class. It's a lot of fun; you'll love it! Here's a sweet video of some ski tricks
