The internet is plenty fast, but I know we block certain things (torrents, for example).

Chris

Okay, that’s cool. All I really want to know.

I also heard about several features like that downloadable app for your computer so that you can print a paper no matter where you are and Blackboard. Will that be covered again when we move in?

Yes it will; but details are on the DoIT page as well.

Chris

get DC++ as soon as you get to campus. Wired internet is great and reliable, wireless internet is good but not that great and the signal can be weak at times. sbushare.com. This is a network between students to share files (legal file share or you can go the other way and share illegal stuff which is common also)

What’s DC++?

a file sharing program. Wont talk about it much. go to [SBUShare - Stony Brook’s DC++/ShakesPeer hub](http://www.sbushare.com)

I would be very careful using illegal clients on Stony Brook’s network…

Depends the use… You can download illegal stuff, or you can choose to download legally.

Torrent restrictions are silly and block legitimate downloads, it’s just a stupid filter for the .torrent extension which everyone just walks around.

There are DNS blocks on rapidshare and other sites also easily bypassed via direct IP.

Also yes, the wifi is quite unstable in the dorms regardless of what the doit people say. Heck even if the library experiences LOL sudden drops and disconnects. In dorms you’re best off using the wired until some dick shoves in a improperly made splitter and nukes the entire floor’s connection until it’s removed.

Pretty much install that, it creates a “Print from anywhere” printer on your computer that you select, pretty much the same options as the library computer gives you. It only works while on the campus network in some form(wireless, wired, w/e) And you still need to manually “release” it at the print station.

Via direct ip? Can you explain that a little more, please?

I say DC++ is the best option. Its easy to bypass the torrent block… but why go through that when you can easily get access to 38+TB of data in the Stony Brook DC++ hub.

Because DC++ doesn’t have everything? Theres many movies/videos that are ancient I can torrent but LOL good luck finding someone sharing it.

true!!! What i do is that everything i can’t find at DC++ i wait until i get home every three weekends and download it. The torrent block can be annoying and every time i learn a way to get around it the university somehow updates their blocking measures and my “way” get blocked…

What about direct downloads? Like MF and MU, for example.
