So do i have to take math for pre med?

so turns out im the only asian guy who is terrible at math but im strong in every other subject... ive learned that some med schools dont even require math i.e. Calc so does that mean i dont have to take it? keep in mind im transferring from a CCC to a UC? so any answers? beacuse if i could avoid math that would be fantastico!

I think you'd be severely limiting your options if you don't take math in college.

Agreed. Definetly plan on taking Calculus, and perhaps maybe Biostatistics. It'll just put you at a disadvantage with your med school peers if you don't.

so i can avoid math just that it would be a bad idea? and norcal guy when u say i would be limiting myself can you please elaborate?

Some medical schools require you to have at least one year of Calculus. I know of a few schools in particular--Harvard, Hopkins, Duke, Wash. U, and a few more.

I don't see how not taking Calc. in college would affect you in medical school, unless you're in the HST program at HMS, or something similar elsewhere.

Keep in mind that your application will be compared with those of other candidates not only from other schools, but also--more specifically-- your own school...(Right?) Therefore, if you decide not to take Calc, I think you will limit yourself in the admissions process if most of your non-math/non-engineering major peers DO fulfill the Calc. requirement, all their stats/factors remaining similar. Hence, I think it's always best to complete max. of the min. requirements.

If you DO plan on applying to one of the schools with the Calc requirement, you can't unless you take one year of Calculus. You can also, in most cases, use AP scores to fulfill these requirements i.e. you don't need to take upper level Math classes if you can just AP out of the basic two/one semester(s) of Calc.

If you can avoid taking Math, and you are bad at it....by all means AVOID TAKING IT! Remember that your Science GPA on the AMCAS is BCP"M"...Hope that helps.

even though no med schools require it (though some recommend it) you should take statistics if you can...it isn't difficult compared to calc and from what I've heard it is one of THE most valuable classes you can ever take....it's good for helping you understand research papers and research methodologies, and will help you in the future..

and I think 12-16 of the 125 med schools require at least 1 semester of calc...so look at the MSAR book and see which med school require calc.

hope that helps

UCLA requires it, at least.

obviously i must thank you for all of your respective opinions. CC has really cleared up a lot of difficult questions for me... Seems like i wont be taking a calc
class anymore!
