So don't even bother applying cause I have no chance?

Hi, my name is Richie and I am getting very nervous about my college chances. I would, from the bottom of my heart, appreciate any response and opinions on my chances of getting into UVA regular decision, which are probaly zero to none.

Ethnicity: White male

Location: NY…OUT OF STATE

GPA: Our school gives number grades out of 100 so my weighted average from 9-11 grade is 99.604. It would therefore be a 4.0 GPA.
Rank: Top 25% out of approx. 140 students (Very competitive grade)

SAT I highest composite: 570 verbal, 640 math, 670 writing (11 on essay)…1880 overall
Remember: UVA looks at writing just as much as math and verbal
SAT II: 700 US History, taking another one (not sure yet) in December

Activities: (All from grades 9-12):
Wrestling, baseball, chamber singers, interact community service club, students against drunk driving, newspaper club

Awards:
All-State Chorus
All-County Chorus (grade 9,10,11,12)
All-County Wrestling (grade 11)

Note: I will be emphasizing how much I want to sing at their school, it looks good to want to help out the music program as schools get a lot of recognition for winning choral competitions believe it or not.

Decent amount of community service hours; probably around 60-70 hours overall.

Work Experience:
General counselor at the Boys and Girls Club and have my own small business on eBay.

AP Scores:
AP European History: 3
AP American History: 3
AP Language and Composition: 2

Currently taking AP Government, AP Spanish, AP Physics, AP Literature

So therefore I took a combined 7 AP classes by the end of high school and the rest a majority of honors classes.

Richie, truthfully your chances are not that good. Your SAT scores are low for out of state and your class rank is also low. But really, it doesn't hurt to apply, you never know. Good luck!

Hi Ritchie,

Well, I agree that your scores are low.

There are a few considerations, however. Is your HS particularly tough? Is it a private school? Does it send a lot of kids to UVa? (Two years ago, a newspaper article talked about admitting a kid with lower scores because she was the first person to apply to UVa from her town.)

Be careful with the choral competition thing. There are several choral groups at UVa: Glee Club (oldest), University Singers (largest), VA Women's Chorus, Academic Village People, Virginia Gentlemen, etc. My S is in one of these, but he has never mentioned competitions. Road trips, yes, but competitions, no. Mention your singing, but don't slant it toward "winning" competitions.

By all means, you should apply. Emphasize the importance of that community service, and how you want to contribute to society in similar ways at UVa. You have a strong schedule with seven AP classes. It shows you can handle UVa academically.

If I told you you had a 30% chance of getting in, it's still worth the effort, right? Do that at five similar colleges, and you might get lucky!

In short, focus on your essays and be passionate in what you're talking about.
