So here are my stats, In or Out?

I applied as an intended Business major (accounting), but now I'm wondering if i should have chosen College of Liberal Arts, since it seems ALOT easier to get into.

So here are my stats:

I'm From Michigan (OOS)

I went to the International Academy (ranked 6th in the nation) for 3 years.

After I went back to my "home school" I ended with a 3.4 GPA, but that is the un-weighted GPA since I was taking an All-IB curriculum up until my senior year, it should be near a 3.9 weighted.

ACT:27
SAT:N/A

EC's: 1st Chair in the Orchestra for Freshman/Sophmore years, A chair delegate for Model United Nations (3 years), Chess Club member (2 years), Key Club (1 yr.), Future Business Leaders of America (2 years)

Volunteer: Volunteered at the British Open Qualifier, Disc Jockeyed at a community event, Volunteered at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, Organized a Christmas Parade

I applied on Nov. 29, 2008 and am sure the decision is coming any moment, and I REALLY want this.

P.S. Should i try to contact them and let them know that I'm applying to their LSA, not directly to the Business school?

Definitely out. Everything depends on rank for UT.
A 27 ACT will not get you into McCombs.
Not much of a chance either for Liberal Arts unless you're top 1% ish.

Whats your rank... gpa is worthless since systems are different at every school.

An out of state student with a 3.4 GPA and a 27 ACT? Based on what people have posted in the past about who got in and who did not get in, the odds are more toward you not getting in, but you never know.

The problem is that they need to have over 90% of freshmen coming from Texas, so there is not a lot of room for out of state and international students. Your UT admissions officer knows your H.S., though, so that might help, since you are from a top notch nigh school.

Good luck!

I would say Out.

Yea, my rank at my current high school is not really that accurate since I transferred from another high school that was waaaay harder. Since i had switched schools, i have received consistent 4.0's for the past two semesters, without any real blow-off classes.

So...... basically my transcript says I'm like 130/400 (32.5%). That may not sound good but i know that most of those 129 people ahead of me never took as challenging workload as i did since IB courses aren't even offered there. I proved that i would have had a higher rank had i stayed at my "home school" all 4 years since i haven't recieved less than an A in any class for over a year.

To Foxshox, I totally agree, GPA is different at every school and the way in which a GPA is earned gives a student an advantage for class rank. (eg. A hard school = harder to get A's vs. an easier school = easier to get a 4.)

You won't have the opportunity to tell them that, so just 32%... so you pretty much have no chance at all.

Well, what I did do was type them up a nicely prepared Essay C, which stated all of the above in a formal matter. I explained to them why i believe my rank should be reconsidered.

They only read Essay C when you're borderline. When they look at your class rank they probably won't even read the essays.

Sorry but it won't work. Again, as someone has mentioned, seats at UT are extremely limited for OOS and int'l applicants. Even if they cut you some slack with regard to your class rank, your ACT score is simply not competitive enough and there is nothing that stands out in your ECs.

I'm out of state, and I just found out that I got accepted into the college of communications (undeclared) and I only had a 28 ACT and 1720 SAT..but I was in the top 10% of my class with a 3.9 unweighted GPA. I'm happy to get in, but I'm still not sure if I can go because I might not get enough financial aid to afford it.....

Even if you bomb the SAT, UT has to accept you based on the top 10% rule.

if you graduate from a Texas high school.

wow Ksilver are you serious? and you being OOS thats pretty interesting...from reading around CC I thought that getting into UT OOS was as extremely difficult..

He was IN the top 10% with an UNWEIGHTED 3.9 gpa. I'd say he's qualified.

He may not get the $$$ to go though, UT is stingy.

Probably out. I had a 31 ACT with a higher GPA and class rank (top 25%), all AP classes, etc. and got rejected from UT-Austin engineering. I'm guessing my rank kept me out and I'm afraid yours might, too.

ag54--He clearly says a 3.9 is his weighted GPA, with a rank of 130/400. How did you come up with him being in the top 10%?

This is the post I was responding to, as was Longhorn 007

This guy clearly says he was in the top 10%, that's how I came up with it ;)

Yea, I'm probably going to go to ACC for a semester and try transferring in the spring. As of now, im a part-time student at a local university with 8 credits. If i take 8 more in the summer, then i will only need 14 more credits to transfer in the spring. With ACC --> UT does transferring take place fairly easy if i get good enough grades (3.7 or higher)?

To Ksilver, Austin Community College is a perfect alternative since it is really cheap and most of the courses are directly transferrable. I would prob. go to ACC anyways since my parents control the bank.

30 hours with a 3.7 or higher will get you admitted to UT. It may or may not get you into McCombs. It definitely will not get you into McCombs for the spring semester since they only admit for the fall. If you want to transfer internally once you get to UT, you'll need another 24 hours minimum and your GPA will be figured only on your UT coursework.

if only you didnt apply to McCombs...I think you had a good chance for Liberal Arts if you were in the top 10%...
