I'm from NYC, and though it does get chilly here, how cold is Evanston actually? Do I have to buy a completely new wardrobe?

No. Just learn to layer. A warmer coat may also be in order.

what's the weather in general. Does it ever get below like 20 or 10?

Haha, yes. It does in NY too (I'm from LI). The weather is here comparable- maybe a little worse in Evanston, mostly due to wind chill. I kept all my old clothes, and added on 1) a very heavy north face winter coat, and 2) a few pairs of long undies from a sporting goods store. Put some on under jeans and between that and the coat you can't feel the wind at all. And that's only for those days when it's in the 10's.

the weather in evanston isn't much colder than new york on average (like five degrees), but the wind chill gets pretty bad.

It does get below 20 or 10, I would say the days it is below 10 each year are very few, while it may be below 20 more regularly but not all the time. I'd estimate the average temperature in winter is around 25 degrees.

damn. that's like a 20 degree difference from here in Portland ORegon :(

Never underestimate the wind chill though because that's all that really matters.

i'm from california and it hasn't gotten unmanageably cold yet. Then again, this is my freshman year so what do I know.

I'm from South Florida. If I end up at Northwestern, I'm gonna die from instant frostbite! LOL. It's about 80 degrees here during Christmas.

It's 77 right now (with the wind chill factor).

In South Florida, of course.

Some people adapt well, others don't. My suitemate is from SoCal, and he's adjusted better than most. My girlfriend's room-mate is from southern Florida, and she freezes horribly.

It hasn't even gotten cold yet...the cold months are mainly january and february.

Last time I was in Chicago it was in late January. I was simply walking from my hotel to the Tribune for a project and I felt like I was losing feeling in my face after only 5 minutes of walking.

Ditto the South Florida... I've never lived anywhere even remotely cold, I've been to the beach the past two days. So, I need a clothing breakdown. What should I buy and how much?

Wow. NU must recruit a lot from the South Florida area! I'm seeing so many others here and elsewhere!

Eh.. You won't need more than a sweatshirt until February. That's when you pull out the hat.

Thanks, that was handy.

Go to northwestern dot edu and refresh the homepage until you get to the photo with the icicles blown almost horizontal by wind coming across lake michigan.

Thanks, that was handy.

The weather is only cold if you let it get to you.

I'm aware that it's cold... I just want to know the best way to combat it... parkas? trenches? turtlenecks?
