I was just wondering the other day how one exactly becomes the Dean of a college or university. Like, what career path does the average college administrator take?

bump…I was just wondering about this too the other day! Like do you get a phd or mba or something?

It usually goes like this: get your Ph.D, become a professor, gain tenure, get involved with the school board on departmental issues first then campus issues later and continue accumulating accomplishments under your belts, establish your name and eventually when you have enough experience + connections and the opportunity comes, go for it. Most of these positions, when they are up for grabs, float within a small circle in academia.

That’s USUALLY how it goes, there are exceptions but you probably shouldn’t count on it.

I read an article that basically ruined my desire to enter academia because of a difficulty in finding positions. I still want to do it, but… ugh.
