So how exactly is a varsity sport defined??

For my freshman year I did track and cross country, but I’m a little confused as to what I say I am on applications… In both track and cross country, we all ran varsity at our league meets, but at bigger invitationals we would delegate into JV and Varsity. I got a letter for cross country, but for track I only got a pin. However, even the people who ran varsity everytime only got pins, but they also did another sport… and apparently our school only gives away one letter per person? So if you got a letter in another sport you would get pins from thereon. So do I put varsity all four years?? It doesn’t say if I’m JV on my transcript. Is varsity defined by receiving a letter, orrrr

Usually whay schools do is they give you a varsity letter the first time you letter in something then a pin or patch or something to put on your letter after that. So if I’m understanding correctly, you probably can put varsity down for both sports this year.

That very common. 1 letter and pins for subsequent seasons/seasons in different varsity sports.

Nor would it unless your school is unique. You’re fine for listing 4 years of varsity.

The pin is not unusual for varsity. However, in those two sports, most teams have clear criteria for earning a varsity letter/pin. Usually a minimum number of points scored, participation in specific meets (district), and/or coach decision. It’s usually made pretty clear after the season who has earned the designation. You just will want to be sure that, if asked, your coach would agree with what you list. (Unlikely to happen, of course, but it would be a shame to misrepresent something like that, which will not have a major impact on admissions unless you misrepresent something).
