My son and I are working on his resume for an upcoming interview and neither of us is sure how varsity letters work. For example, he will have played on the varsity football and wrestling teams for all four years. (He's a junior) He physically got a letter for both sports after Freshman year.....and in subsequent years he got certificates saying he lettered in the sport. How do you put that on a resume? Are you either a letterman or you're not? Does it matter if you get letters every year? How do you present that?

bump…any thoughts?

I would list it as:
Varsity Football Team - 3 year letterman (09, 10, 11)
Varsity Wrestling Team - 3 year letterman (09, 10, 11) or (09-10, 10-11, 11-12)

in my experience you only get 1 physical letter to put on a letter jacket, and subsequent letters are awarded via certificate and/or a pin to put on your letter that signifies you received another letter. So your total letters are the physical letter + certain pins.

Similar to the Army and Air Force and the Bronze Star. They don’t issue more stars, but rather an “oak leaf cluster” for each subsequent award received.
