So far I know, I got rejected from MIT, waitlisted from UChicago and GTECH.
I honestly thought I could get into Gtech (Not saying it’s easy, but just comparing myself to some others who have applied GTech early and got accepted were just less competitive people afaik. Also, not trying to sound cocky…)
Anyways, thats not the major point. Most of my colleges I have left are all of high caliber, such as Cornell engineering, UPenn, Princeton, Stanford, etc etc.
I know my UChicago essay was EXTREMELY good, which probably led to a watilist probably, but I also got waitlisted from Gtech. Do I not have any hopes at these other top schools?
I would just like to hear stories from people who were in the same situation as me, and if they got into other great schools or not. Thank you!
Ok, I know this isn’t very helpful now, but people should always apply to a couple schools that they know for sure they will get into, “safeties”. Like you, I was wait-listed at UChicago, but I also have a lot of schools I’ve gotten into, from safeties like SUNY Binghamton to more medium level schools like Boston college and Fordham, the point is to have options.
Just because you were rejected at MIT and wait listed at UChicago doesn’t mean you have any less of a chance getting into the ivies. Most everyone who applies has high sat scores, a billion extracurriculars, etc. A lot of people are qualified and it comes down to intangible qualities.
Good luck! But maybe also look into lower level schools that would let you apply this late… Just to be safe.
I mean I have a safety schools obviously no need to worry about that. That wasn’t the main point (Not trying to sound rude or am I trying to be… just don’t know how to say it… sorry!)
My main point was I was waitlisted from UChicago and rejected from MIT, I get it. But I was also waitlisted at Georgia Tech, which makes me a bit concerned that I won’t be getting into any of the top colleges that I would like to go into, and thus, was just trying to see if people were in the same position as me.
You don’t really need to worry. Different schools look for different things in their students. I am waitlisted from UC Davis, but I got in Caltech. You will never know until you get your acceptance/rejection letter.
Same boat as you, rejected MIT, waitlisted at WUSTL and U chicago, really doubting myself right now…
Keep your head up, I’m hoping for good news come the end of March for the both of us
You can look at the Common Data Sets for each college, for example for Georgia Tech last year:
Number of qualified applicants offered a placed on waiting list 3,900
Number accepting a place on the waiting list 2,150
Number of wait-listed students admitted 174
If you get waitlisted at a school you know you’d go to if you get an offer, then let the school know that. Sometimes school put you on the waiting list because they don’t think you will attend-either your stats are higher than those who usually accept their offer or they don’t sense you really want to go there. A promise to accept the offer will get you bumped up on the list for some schools. Choosing students from the waiting list who promised they’d accept an offer can do wonders for the yield-it is like a Early Decision but backwards.
Wow lol just an update in case anyone is interested (I doubt it, but oh well)
I got waitlisted from UVA Engineering INSTATE
Gtech waitlisted
Uchicago waitlisted
MIT rejected
Accepted into Vtech (Safety)… these waitlists are really going to haunt me down and drive me nuts… help! I’m suffocatin!
These waitlists are making me feel like I am not going to get into any of the schools I applied to for engineering… Hopefully that isn’t the case
One bit of advice for you is that I would not put a lot of hope in Georgia Tech’s waitlist for this year. Last year they had too many students say yes so they ran out of dorm space for over 100 freshman. Those freshman had to live in lounges or non-freshman dorms. I have heard that they will tighten the waitlist number so I imagine that number will go down. Plus they take off the waitlist according to their institutional need. Right now Tech is really pushing to increase their class of women therefore I think that is where they are going to be pulling from (I don’t know your gender but I think I read somewhere you were a male). My D is on a student recruitment team for a special program and she told me that they were shocked at the number of students applying for it this year.
Virginia Tech is a great school for engineering. If that turns out to be your best choice I think you would have a great experience there. Good luck.
Yeah, I probably would choose VTech over Georgia anyway considering financial options…
Its just that the waitlist came as a surprise, as people who are way below my stats / EC’s got accepted into Gtech from my school (Not trying to say I am something special or anything)… but then again, who am I to judge? I guess I didn’t have what they were looking for.
I am hoping I can get into one of the ivies that I have not heard from, but hearing that all these people got their likely letter and me not makes me kind of worried, and might have to settle with Vtech.
I am still waiting to hear from stanford, princeton, cornell, upenn. I hope I get into at least one of them… hopefully a miracle happens?
If you are not an URM (or even if you are) or in some other special category you are not likely to get a likely letter. I posted a thread about it earlier this week and was finally reassured that the lack of a likely was not a condemnation of anything. Not holding my breath for the ivies either but who knows anything at this point
